So my blinker is going a bit fast, and the dash indicator is dim. It's also dimmer on the driver's side. I'm assuming this is all due to a short somewhere, but wanted some advice on best methods to chase it down.
More modern vehicles from the 70's and 80's that have the issue you are describing is due to a bulb being burned out. It may be a dual filiment bulb such as the brake/turn signal/ taillight.
Most times when folks talk about a short in the wiring what's probably happening are corroded, loose, or missing ground path(s). The frame itself is used for the return path for turn signal markers and the headlights and the radiator support. With these old trucks you'll have to spend some time replacing the cables and getting every connection clean, bright, and tight or the voltage drop will be significant, and weird stuff starts happening because the device drawing current will pull it through something or somewhere else. Also pay particular attention to the main harness connectors through the firewall.
I ended up pulling the flasher assemblies (front) and found some pretty corroded wire "connections" <---- Barely distinguishable as "connections" lol. With a bit of cleaning/stripping and some solder, the wires have been shrink wrapped and repaired. The result was marvelous until the fuse blew out. At that point I figured I should pull the back indicators/flashers and have a look... good thing I did because there were 3rd wires added to each pigtail and the ends were loose. I guess one touch to ground would put those out of commission quick. Surprised it hadn't happened sooner.
