code 404, turbo?

Hey guys, 2007 F-350 149,000
The truck does sit here and there. I've been having to clean the EGR every couple of weeks. The past couple of weeks however I've had more of a problem. Every so often I'll loose power for a moment, no boost, then a puff of smoke out the exhaust. (black, gray and white). Once I get the puff, Boost shoots up to normal and lots of power. Tends to feel like it plugs up a bit on decal mostly. Is it safe to assume the turbo is sticking and needs to be cleaned?

Sticking turbo should be giving you a P0299, over/under boost. P0404 is an EGR problem. Google it for causes and remedies.

trouble codes (DTCs): P0238, P0299, P0404, P0478, P2262 and/or P2263. These concerns and/or DTCs could be a result of coking deposits inside the turbocharger.
ACTION:
Follow the Service Procedure to correct the condition.
SERVICE PROCEDURE
Coking deposits inside the turbocharger turbine housing can impede vane response causing high or low instances of exhaust pressure. Unexpected exhaust pressure results can cause over-boost, under-boost, insufficient or excessive exhaust gas recirculation, or unexpected EGR valve position, resulting in these symptoms.

Is it possible that the carbon uped vanes of the turbo are setting just the one code, rather than both codes?

Your truck has a history of EGR problems. That's where I'd be heading. Esp. since you have no P0299 code which is usually the first to pop its head with a sticking turbo.

I did take the EGR out again today, not as bad as its been. I also took the intake tube out of the turbo to look at the wheel. Noticed some oil from the CCV, so I decided to reroute that any see what happens.

Oil in the intake tube is pretty normal. As mentioned earlier you have EGR issues.
Cleaning it every couple of weeks likely means the cooler is leaking. It's possible the vanes are sticking, Has the turbo been off and cleaned that you know of?

I would also check the MAP hose and nipple, they might be plugged with junk if the EGR valve is needing to be cleaned that often. That can affect boost as well since that is what tells the PCM how much boost to send to the turbo.

Since I've owned it (5 years) I've never removed the turbo. Don't know to prior. I do sometimes let the truck sit for 1 to 2 weeks without driving. Most driving is short drives 50 mph, does idle a lot. For the past few weeks I'm making sure to get it out more often and get on it often. Even highway driving. I will remove the Map hose and nipple to visually check tonight

You are a good candidate for a cleaning then IMO
6.0 is not an engine that likes sitting long periods, short trips and long periods of idling
There is a saying with the 6.0, drive it like you stole it at least once a week.......keeps the vanes moving better.
A grocery getter or church mobile it is not.

You mentioned the EGR gets dirty often...is it damp?
Truck using any coolant?

Truck using any coolant?
That's exactly why I mentioned the way it gets used. Its dry Carbon not wet, no coolant loss either
I did check the map hose and nipple, they are clean

What way are you holding the EGR valve when your cleaning it with carb cleaner?
It should be held electronics up and never down. The fluid gets in and messes with things.
Also I agree it's likely time for a turbo cleaning. While you doing that and the MAP you may
as well also check the EBP tube and the manifold opening to be sure that they are also cean.

Just FYI, my turbo will stick occasionally but I never get the p0299. I have the vgt% displayed on my edge so I can see and feel it.

I have always been able to get it unstuck though.

So this week the 404 code, went away and the 402 code popped up. I've done some research and right now I've come up with cleaning the MAF and look into the EBP sensor/tube. Well, removed the intake and the ends of the tube on both sides look terrible. All rust and doesn't look to healthy to just disassemble and clean. I'm going to order a new tube and sensor. And while waiting to get those in, I'll just keep putting some penetrating oil on the fittings so hopefully they will come apart easily when I change it out.
