Fixing and Preventive Work - Comprehensive

Hello all,

I have started the process of fixing a long crank at cold and doing preventative measures while at it. Pretty similar to what Norton72 is doing currently. I have plenty of time, no rush other than wanting it back together.

I put the truck and things already done in my signature. Here is what I plan to do (many parts in hand):

- Standpipes and dummy plugs (in hand)
- Glow plugs and harness (in hand)
- Serpentine belt (in hand)
- 6.4 Transmission oil pan (in hand)
- Change pulley on alternator (in hand)
- Switch to ELC coolant (need to get)
- Oil, oil filter, fuel filters, air filter, coolant filter, thermostat, Degas cap (need to get)
- STC fitting (need to get)

Updated, decided on and added after feedback:
- OEM oil cooler and screen
- BPD EGR cooler
- FICM with Atlas 40

Need opinions if you're willing to help:

- EGR cooler and valve - Plan to go Bulletproof Diesel EGR or Sinister? Emissions are not an issue here YET but who knows so no delete for me.

- Oil cooler: 1. Should I just do this now? Deltas ranged 8-12 using road test. 2. OEM or Bulletproof Diesel oil cooler? Or something else? I am inclined to stay with OEM since other things will be addressed like ELC, STC, coolant filter, etc.

- HPOP stainless screen: Yes if keeping current one but does a new OEM one come with it?

- FICM rebuild and Atlas by Ed? Mine shows no signs of issues but would Atlas be a nice addition? 53v?

- Injectors? I figured between all factors (194k, bad glow plugs, long crank at cold, etc), the injectors are tired at very least.

- ICP Sensor? Screen?

- Turbo drain tube, feed tube?

- Water pump?

- ARP studs and head gaskets?

- Anything else?

Sorry for the long post on something that has been addressed many times. I'm hoping the collective wisdom here can help verify my list. I am also consulting this thread on the ORG quite a lot: Write Up: Bullet-Proofing the 6.0L PSD.

Thank you!

Add a fuel pressure gauge to the list.

I am not a sinister "anything" fan, so I say go w/ a BulletProofDiesel EGR cooler. They sell a very nice one.

I agree w/ an OEM oil cooler.

FICM from Ed is nice, especially w/ the Atlas 40.

BPD stuff is quality. Their oil cooler is overkill for most. I've got the bpd oil cooler on mine, not that I don't trust OEM, but I don't trust oem. Most the trucks that tow heavy out here in socal have gone that route. We have some long steep grades to/from the desert and it gets hot. It's something I no longer have to worry about. Truck had the BPD EGR cooler which I left when I did the oil cooler. It is a nice part.

Fuel pressure is nice, I've got an EDGE CTS/2 (from ed) and added EGT, then later added fuel pressure using the Edge universal harness and an off the shelf sensor (not edge's). IMHO the Edge is probably the best monitor for these trucks. It lets you watch everything and set alarms. Like EGT alerts at 1400, EOT at 240, ECT 220, low fuel at 45psi, etc.

FICM with Atlas 40 really wakes up the truck, it's night and day, and is worth it.

New idlers, and tensioner in addition to that new serpentine belt, and New hoses. That heater hose that goes across the back is easier to get to with the top off the engine. . Motorcraft for those.

Thanks much for both of your replies. Do you have any feedback on the remaining things? I updated my first post to show progress after feedback.

I do monitor always via Torque Pro. And I also have a fuel pressure gauge. Both show in my signature, just abbreviated.

BPD EGR and Atlas 40 were easy choices with your 👍.

The updated stainless HPOP sump screen is good since you will be in there anyway.

If you have no signs of injector issues (and your fuel pressure is good at WOT), then I would personally wait on injectors. They could be fine for many more years.

I wouldn't worry about the ICP sensor either - unless you have a code for it or start seeing fluctuating numbers,

The turbo oil drain and the oil feed line would depend on what model year you are working on. Your 07 should have both already upgraded IIRC.

If you had the 90MM water pump (which you don't), then I would upgrade to the larger one (which requires a new front cover also), but it would be a "toss up" to me to just throw in a new one for your 07. I guess it probably would be wise with all the other work being done. IMO the 100mm OEM water pumps are just fine.

The heater hoses are a good suggestion!

You may even want to through in a new crank and cam sensor since it will never be easier to access them.

Sorry fellas, I didn't realize my signature wasn't showing. No wonder you both talked about fuel pressure!

Mark, thanks for the hose suggestion. And Mark for agreeing. I will add that to the first post. Am also doing some more research before I post back with additional questions.

One "Oh shoot" moment I had yesterday is realizing that if I am to switch to ELC, I've read folks flush first (restore maybe) with the old HPOP so it can collect the junk. Mark, haven't you written about that? I am still not far along, so can easily do that if it's a good idea.

I have a brand new replacement for the STC fitting. Its the entire kit, OEM Ford part, # 4C3Z-9B246-F 1X. Just received it yesterday and its still in the unopened bag. If you want it, PM me and I'll sell it to you cheaper than you can buy it. I bought it not knowing that my 2004.5 engine doesn't need this part.

Yes, folks usually do flush with the old oil cooler in place, and then change the coolant after that.

Mark, do you have an opinion on what to flush with/how? Lots of info out there. Restore, VC-9, just water, another choice? Perhaps you have a link to favorite write up?

Also, I have a fumoto on the oil pan but hadn't thought of radiator and block. Think I'll add those to list.

And, I spotted these two interesting ideas:
The oil cooler backflush adapter
Shut off valves on the heater core lines

I would first check to see if you have any plugging in the existing oil cooler. If not, just flush with distill;ed water.

What about larger cables between the batteries and upgraded grounds?

When I got mine, it needed an oil cooler. I did all the updates when I was in there, STC, turbo feed/return. It had the BPD EGR, I added the BPD HD oil cooler. I also replaced the belt, tensioner, idler pulleys, hoses and water pump. I don't want to work on it again for some time outside of oil changes.
