I need something to store tools, luggage, and other cargo in while facilitating transport of furniture, lumber, and my dogs. I had a toolbox on my previous truck with no bed cover. I liked it, however, transporting luggage or other cargo unsecured and in the elements was not ideal. Also, I didn't like that it occupied so much bed space and was difficult to remove when moving large cargo such as furniture. My last source of frustration with this setup was the difficulty associated with transporting long items such as lumber or canoes/kayaks.
I'm considering the following options for my magnetic gray 2019 6.7 PSD Fx4 CCSB:
(1) Campershell:
ARE Z with Yakima roof rack
Leer 100XQ with Thule roof rack
Jason Cybet
Snugtop Cab High
Snugtop Super Sport
(2) Bed cover with ladder rack:
Bed covers:
Paragon (painted to match)
Lomax Trifold
Extang Solid Fold 2.0
TruckcoversUSA American Roll Cover
BAKFlip MX4
Ladder rack:
Thule Tracrac
Adarac Aluminum Series
Adarac Truck Bed Rack
TruckcoversUSA American Truck Rack
(3) Bed cover only:
Roll-N-Lock M Series
Roll-N-Lock E Series
Pace Edwards Switchblade
Pace Edwards Full Metal Jackrabbit
Retrax Pro
(4) Bed cover with toolbox:
TruckcoversUSA American Work Cover
Truxedo Lo Pro with Weatherguard 27" toolbox
I'm leaning towards the Lomax Trifold with the Adarac Aluminum Series ladder rack. The idea would be to keep the cross members of the rack assembled but store the entire rack (with frame rails) in the bed. When needed, it should be 12 bolts for assembly. I think this would be the most functional, versatile, and best looking solution and is also one of the cheaper options ($953.70 + $449.95 = $1,403.65 with free shipping from etrailer.com).
Checkout Diamondback Covers. They have many cover options. Some support 400 lbs. some support 1600 lbs. I have the SE version and the drop in tool box. Maybe 10 minutes to remove the cover and the tool box when you need the entire bed to haul large items. You can also remove the rear panel of the cover to carry a tall item that doesn’t take up the entire bed.
I went with the combination linked below. Hard roll-up cover, and the TracRac uprights with crossbars simply slide off the aft end when not being used (no wrenches needed). I store the uprights/crossbars in my shed. https://www.tonneaufactoryoutlet.com...-bed-rack.html
I went with line-x’s truck gear hard fold. It’s a Bakflip G2 made for line-x and has a lifetime warranty for the same price. I like to keep hunting/fishing gear in my bed and when I need to remove it it’s just 2 wing nuts and it’s off. My favorite part about it is when my bed is full of gear and I’m searching for one thing I fold the cover in half then stack things on the cover till I get what I need. I like it much better than the soft roll up I had.
Hey Tim, we have some unique solutions at Forged Authority. We make a mounting system that allows different attachments to attach and un-attach in seconds.
We make accessories like toolboxes, tie down hooks, fishing rod holders, chairs, etc. And coming soon will be kayak racks, bike racks, and lumber racks and more.
Our system would be perfect for what you are doing, always changing cargo. Take a look! www.forgedauthority.com
Thanks all. Definitely some interesting solutions. I'm really having trouble deciding between a camper shell and hard cover (w/ rack), particularly the folding hardcovers. Camper shell would be nice for camping/travelling, the dogs, mounting lights, etc. but I'm worried about visibility, the ability to haul large, awkward objects, and to a lesser extent the look. The folding hardcovers look great to me, especially the Lomax. Security seems like the biggest issue with the folding covers. The fact that the rack would need to get setup for each use is also a minor drawback. Even with the Tracrac I would remove the frame rail pieces when not in use. Still should be pretty easy to setup if needed tho. I'm reluctant to go with anything that is not easily removable and blocks bed space such as the Diamondbacks or roll ups like the Truckcovers USA rollup / toolbox combo, both of which look like great products.
Have you checked out softopper? It's a collapsible canvas cover: we got it for our truck and really like it. Keeps stuff and dogs away from the elements an it collapses in 5min to haul our GN trailer.
I enjoy my lomax, it covers the bed well and is very slim. It’s also very simple to remove with one person. A regular rain will let a few drops in and a brushless car wash will leave you with a small puddle. Only downside is if someone wanted in any prying tool will do the trick.
If you are looking for a bed cover and ladder rack be sure to do your homework before purchasing either just to make sure they will work together. There are not many combinations that work well together.
Thanks for all the feedback guys. A few more specific questions as I'm narrowing in on a hard folding cover over rollup or camper shell...
Anyone got any experience with the Extang? Is it more secure than the Lomax? How does it look in person?
Anyone had a Lomax and Bakflip and prefer one over the other? The Bakflip seems more water resistent but definitely doesn't look as nice. Does it have a gutter system?
Anyone mounted lights to one of the removable ladder racks? I'd be interested in doing this but would obviously want quick disconencts that could tuck out of the way, etc.
I have the line-x hard fold which is a Bakflip G2 with a lifetime warranty. I have no water leak at all. It does have a gutter with a drain at the front of the bed. It came with a tube to run outside of the bed but I never installed it and have yet to get any water there.
