A 4R100 from a 5.4L will bolt in place of a trans from a 6.8L. The problem comes in when you try to drive it. The 5.4L trans is not as strong as the 6.8L trans. A 6.8L will tear up a 5.4L trans in a very short time. A trans from a 6.8L will fit and work behind a 5.4L, but many of the shifts are going to be harsh because the trans has more capacity than the 5.4L needs.
You are correct on the 7.3L.
The exceptions are that the early '99 trans has a different solenoid pack, pump, and torque converter. It also doesn't have the two speed sensors, which the later control system MUST have for the trans to operate.
I don't mean to keep an old thread active but I just had a question. I have a '04 SVT Lighting, third gear is not working so I am thinking about having it rebuilt into a performance trans. But can/would it be better to replace it with a 6.8L trans? Would it still be really harsh?
I have a 2003 F350 6.8L 4x4 that the bell housing cracked badly. I'm courious as my transmission had low mileage, an the insides are still in great shape. If I took any 4R100 case, wether it be from a Lincoln navigator or something. If i could put my parts from inside my trans an install them into the other vehicles 4R100. An still have just as strong as a transmission as before?
Dude! I cracked my bellhousing too! (Near the tail shaft, I have a thread with pics) were you able to pinpoint what caused that to happen? My trans shifted like a ****ing dream til she spewed her fluid all over a customers driveway. My tcase had never given me any issue, my rear driveshaft is a little on the loose side, and front driveshaft ujoints are completely seized. Any thiughts on the matter would be greatly appreciated
Early 1999 transmissions did not have speed sensors. They appeared on later 1999 model year transmissions. If the trans does not have the speed sensors it will NOT work. If it does, it will work fine, assumiong that the trans is also from a 7.3L truck AND it has the same drive configuration, i.e., 4x4 or 4x2.

i have a 1999 6.8 4x4 4r100 (9/98) and I'm planning on installing the 6.8 from a 2004. Do I need the trans from the 2004?
How do I tell the early 99 4r100 from the late 99 4r100 in a 5.4l f150

I have a 2001 ford f350 super duty. I have to get a new transmission for it. I found one but it is from a 2000 ford f350. Will it be compatible with in my truck
They both are 7.3L but my truck is a crew cab and the other truck is a extended cab short bed
I have a 1998 Ford E-350 Econoline Class C RV with a 6.8L V10 trans that's blown. The RV is old so I'm looking at replacing the blown trans with a good, used one. From what I've read here I can replace the 1998 with a 2000 / 2001 with minor modifications. Can anyone provide more details on these required modifications?
You need to change the solenoid body for an earlier one. The pump needs to come out and an orifice in the pump body changed from 0.250" to 0.030" diameter.
