Started as a 351m, took forever to find a crankshaft. The engine was overheating and leaking, I decided to go a step above just a rebuild. My list so far is Edelbrock cam, timing set, intake and valve springs. Holley 600cfm carb, 2 inch spacer, new valves, hardened valve locks. Oil mod, freeze plugs, removed the pound of casting sand from the block that ford gave me for free. T meter pistons in .040 over, I spent about a week on each head with a die grinder cleaning them up, even cleaned up oil returns and all.
. I cannot wait to get this thing running, I really want to rollerize the c6 now too but I may wait
T Meyer pistons, good. For the camshaft, the Edelbrock cam is pretty generic and a more modern cam like the Comp 265DEH would be a better choice. Buy lifters and springs to match from Comp. OR, the lowest level Lunati Voodoo cam and kit. You can buy the "Edelbrock" cam from about a dozen places, under different names. The problem, as lined out by someone on this board, is the generic cam has slower opening and closing ramps and therefore the overlap is greater.
I had already got the cam when I read there are better. But I have the new springs and lifters, and the only part I am waiting on is the crank to get here. This motor will be for pulling a trailer, I just got a second one and it will be the better cam and built solely for something I don't yet have. Thanks for the input though, I have been lurking here for awhile and reading lots of info
There is a lot of really good info over on the 335 series (351M / 400 / Cleveland) forum if you're interested. It's a bit more specific of a forum than this one, but both have excellent information.
Thanks, I just can't believe these motors only had 150-170 hp. This truck pulled a 7500lb car hauler with no trouble even before I started this. I tore down the oil pump yesterday and took sharp edges off and polished contact surfaces. Spins pretty smooth now. Cleaned all the connecting rods and used a 500 grit hone to clean up the big ends, only had 1 that the seam was offset a little. The crank is supposed to be here Saturday. I put the rods in the oven at 375 for 20 minutes to remove the pins, need to get them back together now.
