Manual Trans starter?

I’m trying to figure out if I have the correct starter. The truck is a 1974 F100, manual trans, now a 1971 351W (was 302). I am currently changing from a 3 speed manual, to a Tremec TKO 500 based on member, Hi-O Silver’s recommendation. Based on my online research I have confirmed that I have the correct bell housing for my 164 tooth flywheel. Notice the damage (indentations) all around the flywheel from the starter gear going beyond the ring gear into the flywheel surface. Is this common, or normal? It’s possible that the damage is from the ancient past, but I did find a fair about of metal debris in the bell housing, which makes me wonder if it is recent damage. The current starter was installed by PO. I drove the truck quite a while, and the starter seemed to work properly. But I’m wondering if the starter gear has been projecting too far into the flywheel. Can it be determined from the pictures whether I have the correct starter for a manual trans with 164 tooth flywheel? As seen in the pics, the starter gear is “recessed” into the housing at rest, which I believe to be the indication of the correct starter for a manual trans. My understanding is that the gear for an automatic trans starter projects further from the housing at rest. The number on the face of the starter is ACE 0-274, and the number on the housing is D2A? 11001-CA.

FWIW, the flywheel (see pics) has a casting date of C5AE, but also has a stamp of C7TE. I guess that means that it is from 1965 or 1967, and is thus not original to the 1971 engine.

The only advice I have on this is to Not use today's chinese rebuilt starters. I went through three, from different sources. All three failed in bad ways. Lots of starter debris in the bellhousing, and starter drive gear on two starters was chewed up from not fully engaging flywheel ring gear. That could have really messed up my expensive flywheel.. I use a Powermaster now. No issues in a year.

Incorrect!

You cannot go by casting or ID numbers to identify what years the parts fit!

The flywheel is correct, the starter is not.

D7TZ-6375-C (replaced C6TZ-6375-C) .. Flywheel - 164 teeth - Use with 11" clutch / C6TZ-6375-C marked with ID number C7TE-A

(6) 5/16" -18 pressure plate attaching holes on a 12 3/8" bolt circle / Obsolete

1966/68 Bronco 289 / 1969/77 Bronco 302 / 1969/76 F100 302 / 1975/76 F150 302 / 1977 F100/150 302 before serial number Y80,001.

Bill, as always, thanks for the detailed info. This is good stuff. I’m still trying to digest some of the numbers.

So, in summary, I need to order a starter for a manual transmission…from your numbers, it looks like I can order for 1974 302 F100 manual trans (i.e. my truck), or a 1971 passenger car with manual and 351W (my engine)?

I ordered the clutch for a 1971 passenger car with 351W, so it looks like that should be okay based on your numbers.
