I am in the process of swapping the C4 in my '72 302 out for a 4 speed manual. With the flywheel and the bell housing on the starter binds up against the flywheel.
I mocked the whole setup up on the bench with the bellhousing on the transmission and the flywheel/clutch bolted together and slid onto the input shaft the starter looks like it should line right up. It seems like the ring gear is too close to the starter now. Are the starters different on the newer trucks. The bellhousing and flywheel came out of a mid 80 F150 and the starter is the original from 72.
Yes, I have the spacer plate in. The trans is not installed...I just have the flywheel and bellhousing. I wanted to make sure that I uncovered any compatibilty issues before I proceeded.
When I did my mockup I measured about 1/2" that the ring gear would have to be in from the mounting surface of the starter to clear the starter gear when retracted. Now with everything mounted on the truck this distance is less than 1/4". So the starter sticks in too far into the bellhousing. That is why I'm thinking that I might need a different starter.
Yeah I stopped in at NAPA on my way home from work and asked to see a starter for a manual trans. It is different. I need to go back to the pick-a-part and get the starter of the truck I got the flywheel and bellhousing from.
