92 4.9 missing timing plate

Hi, I have been troubleshooting my new to me truck and ended up getting some good advise here that the distributer had been clocked incorrectly and the firing order was off. back when i looked at it for the first time, i noticed there was no stamped timing scale on the passanger side, figured this might have been an older engine that used the cast scale. in any case, after a new distributer and some other stuff, got it to start and run fine, but went to adjust the timing, and it definatly needs that scale. the crank pully mark appears on the left side where the scale should be when im flashing the timing light.

so my question is can I adjust the timing without it? it looks fairly hard to get to and im not sure if i want to take the nessisary things off to replace it (and to pull one from a junkyard truck). I have another 4.9 truck that has the scale, i was thinking of marking a ruler at a specific referance point that both trucks have, and then marking where the timing mark i want would be, i could then have someone hold the ruler in the same positoon on the other truck and adjust timing that way. does that sound like it would work? any other way to adjust without a scale?

thanks

Some have a scale like device. That is not what you use to time it. Your timing marks are on the harmonic balancer. I think that is what it is called. Behind the center pulley on the bottom. Usually very rusted and you will have to clean it up to see the marks. The pointer is at the top and look like a V. You will need to mark the 10* mark on the marks. Align the pointer with the 10* mark. This should do it. Not sure on your other truck but you might check it to make sure you didn't use the scale that is further to the right. I am not sure what years use that scale but I have never heard of it being used. Sandy

thanks for the reply. it is mssing the timing marks on the left side of the balancer, thats why i cant adjust the timing. i have found and marked the notch on the harmonic balancer, when i run the timing light it illuminates this mark on the left side of the engine where the timing marks should be, but arent. the marks are stamped into a piece of sheet metal thats bolted to the block, this is the "scale" that im talking about and thats missing from my engine. i found a picture of it online ill attach it here, what im missing is the thing that the green finger is pointing to..

That is the correct one. Mine is stamped into the balancer on my 91 460. My 4.9 is like your only I have the reference piece. Unless you want to get one from a salvage yard you can estimate the area where the Big cut out notch is and set timing as close as possible. If you think you are close and want to experiment make the mark move just a little to the right. A lot of folks set their timing at 11* and 12* so you are better off a little to the right in your estimate. Just listen to the idle and you can manually give it a little gas to check running condition. When satisfied, tighten the distributor bolt and put the spout back in. Sandy
