how is the vinyl vs cloth in the summertime...in particular, getting into a hot vehicle, starting the A/C and driving off...am I going to be sticking to the seat? I agree on the condition of cloth after years, wear spots that allow the foam to shine through, how is the vinyl? does it wear well? do the stitched seams hold up? Thank you.
It will get hot quick in the sun but I always use shade covers and its never an issue (live in the south)
I think it definitely breaths better than the vinyl of old and you don't get stuffy after sitting for a while like you might imagine. Its softer, textured, and not as thick as older vinyl.
The wear is flawless so far but I've only had mine 6 months/8K miles
XLT also has the the keypad on the door as an option. That is the only thing that keeps making me think of getting an XLT over a XL.
The keypad on my wife's Expedition has saved her butt a few times. Plus with young kids that like to play last thing I need is for them to lock themselves in the vehicle and refuse to let me in.
Yes there are aftermarket options but factory installed looks better and I trust more.
Really? I thought on trucks with a fob key, it had to detect the fob when key inserted into ignition. Learned something new.
It does need to detect. Just doesn't need to be a fob. You can get a programmed chip key without the buttons. The truck reads the chip when inserted into the ignition. I just looked up the 2019. The programming we do is still in development so I cannot do those yet. We can program a key with or without fob for a 2018. I'm sure the 19 stuff will be out soon.
on the 19s can you leave the fob in the truck and just take the key part with you? I've gotten to where I hate the big bulky key fob. At work I can toss the keys in the console and use the keypad to get in. but that doesn't work too well elsewhere. makes it really easy to steal then.
I would have probably gone XLT if they offered vinyl seats
mini rant coming....
It blows my mind that you can't get a super duty truck with vinyl and a console.
Even more, I'm amazed vinyl isn't a more popular seat option. Look at any 10 year old truck with cloth they look awful even with good care.
You can do some cool stuff with vinyl these days. Look at how far vinyl floors have come in recent years. Even the base ford vinyl is really nice... just imagine a premium vinyl.
And all of this is happening as leather is declining in quality, isn't breathable, stains and tears easily. The "leather" of today feels like a less durable vinyl.
The Vinyl seats don't wear any better than cloth; they are just easier to clean. The leather doesn't wear well either, but it is perforated and breathes better. I have a co-worker with 10 year old vinyl seats in an XL F-150 and the vinyl is completely torn out and cushion showing through. And you don't have to imagine a premium vinyl...Ford already offers that as a floor option on higher trims.

This is kind of a ridiculous argument. I'm guessing your rainjacket doesn't wear any better than your sweatshirt too, it is just easier to clean? lol
I have a toddler that has a habit of throwing milk containers and it will often just sit upside down leaking.... good luck cleaning up that off cloth!
Yes, all seams can rip. But take a key and scrape leather, vinyl, cloth... vinyl won't show a thing.
All vinyl is a simple print, as in, a picture.... the possibilities are endless but we are left with the most boring grey you have ever seen.....

I don't disagree that vinyl is easier to clean - as is leather. My point is that it is not really any more durable than cloth - they both can wear holes through over time, and vinyl certainly has the greater propensity to crack and split than cloth. As for cleaning cloth, there is a Motorcraft cloth seat cleaner available through Ford dealers that works amazingly well at removing stains from the seats without discoloring them.
I'd also note that $552 shipped buys you a complete Katzkin leather interior for a crew cab truck. This leather is patterned to be nearly identical to factory Ford leather, but is a little better quality. I converted my cloth XLT seats to this leather and it looks great, feels nice, is easy to clean, and is wearing well. I did the work myself - 11 hours - and the finished product looks nice:
Vinyl does have some wear advantages over leather. Doesn't stretch. Doesn't color differently over time from seat to seat. Dark leather fades. Light leather looks greasy over time.
It has a key disadvantage too... leather holds up better from cracking over time. Although, my theory is the modern soft touch vinyls will hold up better than the old hard stuff. Care makes a huge difference too, if you use a sun shade and vinyl care, it should last much longer.
To be clear, I did not intend to argue vinyl > leather.... I just hate cloth seats
