Warn Hubs don't work

I trailer ed the 78 F150 4x4 to the shop. Arizona Driveshaft. The front differential was full of water when we found the truck. I replaced two axle shafts, ball joints wheel bearings etc,
I also bolted on the new warn hubs. The shop called and said the hubs were installed wrong. Ok, I figured they had to remove them anyway. $1800.00 later they called and said the new warn hubs did not work, the truck was in 4 wheel drive. I told them to remove the hubs and I would bring the trailer.
I find nothing wrong with the Hubs except they will not disengage the axle. There must have been something missing in the box.
Any input from anyone? I know the "big" spring should not be installed but it seems like this is what the hubs need. They need to be pushed out.

That sounds about right. The hub needs to be out in order to disengage. If no spring there's nothing to push the hub out.

The spring should be installed, without it you can't unlock the front end. I hope you paid with a CC I would fight the inflated charges and incompetence.

Why “big” in rabbit ears? And why do you “know” it should not be installed? Should be the housing, then spring, then castle, then c clip, then scew, then the cover. If I recall correctly, the castle has a inside and outside? It has been a few years.

They way I understand it is that the aftermarket hubs dont require the factory spring. I didnt use it on my superwinch hubs I installed on my 78 f250 and they work fine. However, the directions for mine said to make sure that the hubs are in the "free" position when installing, otherwise they wont work. Hope that helps.

It sounds like OP is having issues with warn hubs, not the factory style hubs? Only warn hubs I've familiar with for these trucks, are simple 3-4 piece install, internal hub, large snap ring, axle shaft snap ring(varies on some applications), then the external cap that is held on by screws that go into the internal hub. They're next to impossible to install incorrectly.

I will say though, $1800 seems steep if they only replaced shafts, ball joints, & bearings knuckle-out, but none of the gears/bearing in the differentials?
