The truck is a 2004 f250 4x4 xl. I changed the factory locking hubs to mile markers. the truck is equipped with manual hubs only, no auto locking hubs. i installed them just like the instructions and mile markers you tube video showed. It went together fairly easy. issue I'm having is when the hubs are locked there is a clunking noise. when unlocked no noise. any ideas? anybody had this issue before? thanks
Both mm and warn hubs do this, first remove the hubs and take them completely apart and apply a thin layer of quality waterproof grease to EVERYTHING. Then take the new retaining clip and pull it apart so it stretches out and then install it that way. The hands are not properly greased from the factory and need the lube and stretching the retaining clip adds tension so the hub in "snug". The OEM hubs fit perfectly and both MM and Warn guns are a tad small so the slop around
I have warm premium hubs and they did this after I installed them. Called warn and was told to pull the retaining ring apart so it adds tension. A few years later I got the clunk back and removed the hubs but the clip was fine. The dial wore out so I sent them back for warranty, received a call a few days later and was told I'd get a new set but they failed because of improper greasing, I asked what that meant because the instructions or warns website states you have to clean and regreased the hubs. I was told it's needed but warn never changed their instructions GO FIGURE so now once a year I clean and regreased the hubs and it's been about four years with no issues
I'm going to pull them back apart again and look at them closer. MM states to not pack them with grease. I did put a small bit of grease on the splines though.
I initially installed my Warns with the retaining ring they supply. It was loose just as you say. So I took it out and trashed it. Took the ford retaining rings from the stock hubs and cut off the ears to make it just the ring. Installed this instead of the Warn ring and never looked back. Works like a charm and no clunk whatsoever. Nice solid feel to it when you are installing everything also.
Don't pack the dial just apply a nice thinish layer to the dial, return spring, inner hub etc. the grease gives everything a nice cushion so there's no bare metal on metal
