That makes me feel better. The site looks decent and professional, but you never know.
I think I’m going for the 292 rebuild. They seemed to be well spoken of for their spot in their “hey day”. It seems to be more original, but I did think a lot of those 300 inline sixes.
I hope it’s a worthwhile venture. I first drove these old style trucks, and still love ‘em.
I don't know about S&J. I would definitely talk to them first to find out what they know about Y-blocks and how well they pay attention to detail. You shouldn't expect too much for just over $2000 but as a bare minimum, you want to make sure you will get a set of matching large port heads since that is what your engine has if it is original. If they just slap things together, then it is not worth the price. You don't want mix and matched heads with different ports, combustion chambers, and compression for each bank. Read up on this and quiz them about it: Y.
Charliemccraney, those assembly errors is exactly the reason I'd rather have someone else do the internal stuff. They do warranty their work, and their fancy website is impressive. Sadly, that's about all I know.
I don't know anyone that's used them, but I don't know anyone that's really bought a remfg/rebuilt engine from anywhere--AT ALL. Most either don't fool with the older stuff, and just buy something cheap and that runs, or something new with a big ole' nice payment every month. I do know a couple of folks that like to tinker with their own, but both are Chevy folks, and surely aren't Y-block experts.
I rebuilt a 65' 352 about 27-28 years ago. I had lots of help with it back then. I don't mechanic for a living (not really crazy about for a hobby either usually). Most of those places from back then are closed, and the people that helped me then have gotten old. I'm just trying to get this truck running nicely, and still have money to send my son to college in a few years. lol
