Have an old detroit I picked up used for cheap with some other parts...after sitting for months I finally got around to taking it out of the 3rd meember and found this:
I feel like its garbage lol. Any way to repair this cheaply? If not I'm gonna throw a lock right in the 3rd member in my 78 and be done lol.
I'm not with those ^ guys. The damaged area should have no effect on the strength of the carrier. The load transfer from the bearing to the carrier does not go through the chewed up area. If it were to make you feel better you could clean up the chewed up area but it won't make any differance on the strength of the Detroit.
Now the rust is a different issue. The surface rust on the outside of the carrier could be from just sitting for a long time not being used but it could also be from water being in the axle. I would disasemble the Detroit and check for rust in other areas. Very light surface rust isn't going to hurt anything but pitting may.
9 inch. Believe the guy used it in a circle track car and the whole diff was covered in crap. I took the 3rd member out and tried to clean it up some to even see what I had...and since then its been sitting.
The guy I'd suggest is Cass, the owner, at www.doctordiff.com. He has personal service and very righteous prices and can answer your question pretty quickly. Pretty much all he does is axles and brakes and he is very familiar with Dana 60s.
