I have a 04 f350 4x4 diesel powerstroke. Driving down the road it shut down as if someone turned the key off. When i went to start it again it would not crank. I checked fuses, relays, new cam shaft sensor, new crack shaft sensor, and new ignition switch. It still wont crack. Starter is good, batterys. Please is there any thing i can do next
I know you say the batteries are good, but I always charge them and then load test them to make sure. You wouldn't believe how many posts there are that the batteries are OK when they measure a static 12V or even 12.6V. Post results (for when you regain ability to crank).
I know you say the starter works, but have you verified it by cranking (w/ key off) by using the solenoid jumper wire? Instructions below:
Locate the wire to the starter solenoid (yellow with light blue striped colored wire adjacent to the passenger side battery in the engine compartment, near the vacuum pump - it has a "squeeze-and-pull" type connection) ..... you can unplug it and get it to reach the positive battery terminal and try to start it that way.
Assuming the starter cranks using the starter solenoid jumper wire, then check Fuse F2-22 again. Change it out if it is bad.
Then check the fan clutch. A bad fan clutch or shorted wiring to the fan clutch (or broken wire) will keep it from cranking. Unplug the fan clutch. When unplugging, check the wiring to the connector and the wiring to the clutch. If you find damage, repair it.
Then, with the fan clutch still disconnected, also disconnect the EGR valve, the Mass Air Flow (MAF) sensor, and the fuel bowl heater if your model year has one (IIRC all 04's have one, and it was eliminated in 05). Then try cranking. If it cranks then, start plugging things in one-at-a-time to see if it quits cranking with one of the components being plugged in.
If that doesn't work - Download ForScan for a smart phone and get an ELM327 adapter (bluetooth for Android or WiFi for Apple) and check for codes.
After all that, transmission range sensor, wiring to the Instrument cluster, and the PCM itself would be the last things my list.
For the group, and this is often asked for clarification, when you say it won't crank do you mean the starter will not spin the motor (crank) or do you mean the Motor will not start?
He says the starter is good. I actually assumed he cranked w/ the jumper wire already .......... Wrote the procedure some time ago. Simple copy and paste from a rather large spreadsheet (minimal editing thrown in).
Also, it is pretty hard to hydrolock in the middle of driving.
Didn't take it that way, just that we each sort of go down a certain "thought path" when the information is limited. Even with a lot of typing sometimes we don't express everything that nudged us in the direction we took. Sometimes we guess right, sometimes not. I guess if excessive smoke or extremely rough running isn't mentioned then there probably wasn't any. Probably a bad assumption on my part.
I just hope that this isn't ANOTHER thread of "I need help" with no followup. We should have bumped it enough to get his attention though - lol!
