There is nothing special here. Your VIN is not special, buyer is not special, truck is not special, if you can turn it around now, you are not special. You are real close.

Your "buyer" is a liar. It's always everyone else when you are acting like an idiot. Go look in the mirror and say: "Maybe I'm a sociopath."

Your truck is worth what the buyer is offering, if the buyer is legit. End of story. Find another buyer if you don't like the offer.

But unfortunately, for some reason the VIN indicates it is a base model and NOT an XL.
The VIN does not indicate what trim the truck has!

While this is true, there are many VIN decoder sites that do have the information somehow and will supply the info.
One in particular goes one step further,it not only lists the trim level,it's more like (or might be?) a build sheet. All you do is enter your VIN and comes back with great details, simply by supplying your VIN.
Well I guess I deleted it from my bookmarks now as it's no longer free like it used to be years ago now and I forget the name of the site.It was a cool VIN decoder site, still is I'm sure if your willing to pay.

At any rate,I'm sure this what the buyers co is using. Some sort of VIN decoder site that does have the information, even though it's inaccurate evidently as to XL and base model that this guy is so stuck on.He should just sell them his truck based on it being the base model and be done with it.It's not like a co is actually going to literally shell out twice as much for even an XLT over an XL so not sure but clearly something fishy is going on there.

See post #20.

I've decoded over 1,000 VIN's for FTE members using Ford parts catalogs and none have indicated the trim level.

I don't think your understanding still.I'm not claiming the information is actually stored and or documented inside the literal code of the VIN.I understand you and I know and agree with you on that 100%.

I'm just stating that there are VIN decoder sites that will in fact list the trim level. Some even go well beyond this.Though I lost that bookmark,I did record my '93 F250 trucks info from the site.Again, though this didn't come from the VIN's code itself, somewhere, somehow, there is a build sheet associated with my trucks VIN in the great databanks of somewhere lol.

28,677 vehicles matching your year and description in our database.

As far as I can tell,it's all accurate. All I did was enter my trucks VIN.Again though,I understand this is not directly coded within that literal VIN number but it came from some sort of data base of which I don't understand.Ford build sheet info I presume?

The point is,this guy's potential buyer is using something similar to gather info about his truck.Whatever co he's using is claiming they can't step outside and override whatever system their using.Of course this is dumb and the guy should just move on and find another buyer but I think what's going on here,is he wants to actually find out a way into tricking this buyer into shelling out twice his trucks value due to a flaw in their system and he's aggravated that we're not trying to assist him with it lol.As if anyone here could possibly do such a thing even if someone wanted lol.

EDIT:
Here it is for anyone interested.I just searched my old posts as I was sure I've shared it back along.Like I say it used to be free but if you want all this info (if their database does have your trucks info too?) then you can buy it if you want;

http://www.compnine.com/vid.php

I was never curious enough to get my F450's as it went to pay before I bought that truck and well, just too cheap I guess lol.Last I knew they wanted like 5 bucks per VIN I think it was.Put your VIN in and I think it will tell ya how much they want.It is a cool site though as you can see from what it gave me about my F250.Pretty cool.

The only way a VIN decoder could ID the trim line is if it can access the build sheet.

I know for a fact that no 11 digit VIN decoder (thru 1980) can access the build sheet.

I can decode that VIN, and all the codes stamped on the Warranty Plate.

You can order a copy of the build sheet from martiauto.com

You can glue any emblem on the side of a truck. Doesn't change the real world value.

NOT the SAME DIFFERENT. Their system is obviously wrong.
And for some stupid reason, they are willing to pay twice as much for an XL instead of a base.

Features, options, value, and the fact that an XL is a base model are all IRRELEVANT!
It really is all about having the VIN tell them it is an XL to get twice the price!

Problem is, the only way they will accept verification it's an XL is through the VIN system....
And since the VIN shows an XL as a base, it's impossible to verify it as an XL even though it is an XL, so I'm stuck.

Get it now???
Okay, and what do you expect to be able to do about it? There is no separate base and XL model for your model year. The XL is the base model. If their system says there is a base and XL model, then they need to fix it. There is nothing you can do. Furthermore, in previous years the Custom and XL models were still very bare-bones stripped down trucks without many features. There is no possible way the value of an XL would be double that of a Custom. It's just not possible. Even now the difference in value between a base XL '94 F-150 and a loaded XLT isn't great at all.

You're definitely getting caught up in some kind of scam. You probably posted the truck online, got a message from someone who wants to buy it sight unseen and have someone come pick the truck up. They are then going "check everything out" in their system. You'll probably get cut a check for more than the asking price, and then they'll ask you to wire the difference over to them. Then it'll turn out their check is fake, and you're out the money you wired to them.

Find a different buyer. No 25 year old Ford truck is worth that much of a hassle to sell.

Ha! A story of one unethical thought of the desire to swindle a buyer into paying twice the value of a trucks worth, may possibly be the unethical desire of preying on the unethical thoughts and desires of others!..........A real plot twister and just how right you might be too,Ian.

The moral of the story? Being unethical doesn't pay.
