Changed my fuel filter and this is what it looked like. Has a film on it when you wipe the filter pleats. I've never experienced oil or algae but have read algae is slimy which this is. Have always got fuel at a truck stop to eliminate bad fuel.
The black spots on the concrete came out of the filter and dissolve when you touch them.
When looking in the fuel bowl what I thought was dirt is actually the same thing as the black specs above.
That is one black, nasty looking fuel filter. Thanks for the pictures. I like to see stuff like this. I hope you post what made it that way when you find it.
Do you have software to check your high oil pressure and IPR duty cycle? Just curious if it would show up there?
Do you have an inspection camera you could snake down into the fuel tanks to look for algae or gunk?
I've never pulled one to look this bad. Never had oil in fuel so not sure if that causes a film on the pleats or not. Figured oil would be more absorbed into the filter.
The only thing I have to check it is a scanner at work. It has run well, on issue is randomly the engine vibration felt on the floor. It could be the down pipe but now not sure if the filter was prohibiting flow causing the engine to not run well. The other day when pulling the truck out of the garage to put the car seat in, I could hear a engine knock that went away after driving. I couldn't hear it in the truck. I asked my brother and he said it could be a injector knock. Now wondering if it's related to the filter?
I'm going to buy some Power Service Biocide and clear diesel to see if that helps.
I'll have to ask the mechanic at work if he has camera scope.
that looks much better
I bet the clogged filter was starving the engine when more fuel was needed.
did you clean the screen in the bowl? don't look like enough fuel is in the bowl.
screen is right below your thumb in the pic, take a q tip and swab away the gunk
Sorry just got back from our camping trip and we had very spotty service.
I had drained the bowl a little to keep fuel going everywhere. That's why it's drained down a little. Thanks for the advice on checking the screen. I forgot about that. I'll check and report back.
