My truck is having some issues it had earlier this year. A shop I've been dealing with replaced 2 injectors back in April. I had the codes read the other day and the codes for the those same injectors were present along with a few others. I am wondering if the shop never cleared the codes after they replaced the injectors. I asked a buddy of mine who is involved in auto repair and he said it may be possible that the truck would clear the codes automatically after it ran awhile after fixing the issue. Can anyone confirm or refute this? Thank you.
Some codes will clear themselves after a number of key cycles if the problem is no longer sensed. Glow plugs are one of those items. There are a number of codes which could be interpreted as being a result of bad injectors. Do you know the codes that are now being displayed?
Yes, the codes are P0266 which is cylinder 2 contribution fault, P0269 for cylinder 3 contribution fault, and P0272 for cylinder 4 contribution fault. Then I had codes for 7 of the 8 glowplugs. Also P0299 for turbocharger supercharger under boost.
A contribution code for a specific cylinder means the time of the pulse for that cylinder is late (slow) in relation to the others as measured by the cam/crankshaft sensors. It is not a code specific to an injector although an injector can be (and very often is) the issue. Basically it means that cylinder isn’t pulling it weight and these codes can be caused by mechanical issues also.
Codes do self clear after a certain number of drive cycles when the condition is no longer present. A drive cycle is basically a temp cycle from cold to operating temp and back to cold. I think I remember reading 20 is a common number but different codes reset with a less number than others. Emission related codes seem to be taken more seriously than convenience codes for example.
Thanks for all the info. Much appreciated. I changed two injectors today and all the glow plugs on the left side. Truck is running again. Still need to check out the number 3 injector.
