My light burned out on my 96 EB. After checking the electrics to make sure they were getting voltage, I drilled out the rivets (which I replaced with Sheet metal screws and silicone sealant) and opened up the light housing. The neon tube had shattered.
My local dealer wanted $212 because "it's an assembly". The local junk yards did not have any explorers in them for 2 weeks.
I wound up buying an LED lightbar from AutoZone. I took it apart and glued it into the neon tube housing and wired it to the power lines going TO the ballast. Has worked fine for 18 months, and only cost me $20.00.
wher can u look up this power supply module or ballast? as far as an auot parts store goes? can't find it listed anywhere.' parts stores. I ned one for daughters car. light doesn't work. I have power to ballast but no power coming back ouy. Basically i want a replacement part foe it.
The ballast is located at the top of the rear hatch. You need to remove the interior plastic piece from the top of the hatch. It is held on by plastic push connectors like the other interioir panels. The ballast is at the top inside a rectangular cut out area. You need to remove two nuts and the quick wire connectors to and from the ballast. Takes about five minutes.

hey mason, where can I get one of those ballasts or power supply modules. My daughter has an 2003 explorer and I've tried lookin on line for it but can't find it. I've tried both names and have come up empty. I would like to get it workin. Thanks!!
I don't believe the neon tube/ballast/power supply was used on the 2003, that was probably just regular bulbs. If it's like my 2004 Mountaineer was, it's not even LEDs.

Yea you r right. they r not LED's. but it still has that ballast or power supply module, what ever u want to call it. But it doesn't work. its got power to it but not coming out of it to the brake lite. Do you have any idea where I should look to get one? or how I might be able to look it up as far as wording goes? cuz when I try to look it up as ballast or power supply module, I come up empty. I've looked just about everywhere to include Rockautoparts.com .
Thanks,
Jim
I just pulled up the wiring diagram for the 2002 Explorer and it's just a bulb (like my 2004 Mountaineer was), there's no ballast or neon tube. I think you're just looking for the Center High Mount Stop Lamp assembly.
I don't know why its there but there is aballast like yall were talking about in there behind the stop light assembly. its a little black box, or what ever you want to call it, there r plug in's like yall talked about. slip on. male end to female end. one hot the other is ground. the stop light assembly is definately not neon or LED so I don't know why the ballast or what ever is there. Its got a sticker on it that says "model 628" then stamped on the box itself are the following numbers 02205. I've tried cross referencing the numbers and get nothing. But honestly its there. its not just wires going to a factory plug and plugging in. I may have to take a picture and show you.
That is interesting. The "model 628" is suspicious, it doesn't really sound like something OEM. Maybe there is a Lojack system on this that flashes the CHMSL if the vehicle is stolen or something along those lines. Out of curiosity, have you tried just bypassing the box?
