lost my headlights!!!

I have a 2001 ranger super cab 4x4, with a 4 litre, auto. My problem is that i don't have any head lights. There are no low beams,or high beams. The fuses are good, the switch in the dash does not look burnt or corroded. The bulbs are good too. When i turn the switch on, there is only park lights, in both the park light ,and headlight settings. If i push , or pull the signal light arm to change from high beam to low beam, or vis-versa, nothing happens. But if i pull the signal light arm all the way back to "flash" the high beams, i then get the high beams, but only as long as i hold the arm in the "flash" possition. I do have the factory driving lights that are mounted in the bumper, and they do work. The day time running lights have been dis-connected for over 6 years. Having them dis-connected has never stopped the headlights from functioning with the switch ever. I'm wondering if there is a relay somewhere that i have missed? Does anyone have any idea what to check next?- Thanks.

2 areas to look at are the headlight switch pigtail for burned connector and the multifunction switch. If the headlight switch pigtail isnt fried up I would thing the multifunction switch or its wiring is at fault.

OK lets play trace the circuits. You will need a 12V test lamp or multimeter grounded and set for voltage. You first need to check fuse 24 at the battery junction box which is a 30 amp fuse. From there you need to verify power from that fuse which is hot at all times to the headlamp switch. You should verify 12v at pin 6 dark blue and orange. With the headlamp switch in headlamp on position you should have 12v also at Pin 2 of the headlamp switch with a Red and Yellow wire. This is the output wire going to your Multifunction Switch. Verify 12v at the multifunction switch Pin 2 at connector 202b again it will be Red and Yellow. If you dont have 12v coming out of the head lamp switch in the headlamps on position replace the headlamp switch. If it passes and sends 12 volts to the multifunction switch verify 12v coming out of pin 3 at the multifunction switch connector 202b, which will have a Red and black wire coming out of that pin location. If there is no voltage coming out of that pin location in the low beam headlamps on position replace the multifunction switch.

Power exits the multifunction switch pin 3 Red and Black wire and goes to the battery junction box. It splits power to two fuses in the battery junction box fuse 38 to the left headlamp and fuse 42 to the right headlamp. If all circuits pass to this point with low beams turned on you should have power to both those fuses and they should both be not blown. If they are blown replace them. If there is no power you have an open circuit between the multifunction switch and the power distribution box.

If both those fuses are good and have power the volatage is then sent to the individual headlamps White and light green on the left headlamp and Dark Blue and Light Green to the right hand headlamp. If there is power to those two pins in the headlamp connectors you likely have two blown bulbs, not too awfully uncommon.

If the bulbs are good and you have power then you have lost ground, however each has its own ground so that is highly unlikely.

Hope this helps.
