Remote Transmission Filter Install

I have been reading this forum for around 10 years , ever since I bought my truck. It's my first diesel and I knew nothing about them. I learned a lot from everyone here and never thought that I would be starting a thread. Well, for some reason this old guy got the bug and here I am posting my 3rd thread with your positive response to my others.

I haven't seen too many threads about remote tranny filters lately so I hope there is still interest in them.

I did this Install about 5 years and 40,000 miles ago. I haven't had any transmission issues or leaks so I am confident in the design.

I decided to make my own kit because I didn't like any of the kits out there. I was on the fence for a long time on the Strictly Diesel kit but just didn't like their use of brass fitting elbows. I like fluid to flow through nice radius bends.

I decided to go with AN fittings. I used all -6 size.
I used Russell hose and fittings. The filter base is from Derale. The filter is a Wix that is used on other transmissions as an external spin on filter. That's what gave me confidence to use it.

The transmission line fitting is a 5/8 x 18 thread. Took me a lot of searching but I found 5/8 x 18 x -6 inverted flare fittings under "Power Steering" fittings in the Russell catalog. Finding these fittings was the hardest part of assembling the kit for me. I used their "ProFlex Hose" . I bought 2 prepackaged 3ft lengths. I got all my parts from my local Irish auto parts store who price matched internet prices except the female inverted flare fitting. Only place I could find it was Jegs.

The filter is mounted on the outside of the frame. I picked a spot where the hoses flowed naturally to it. The hoses are routed up from the transmission over the frame. Below are patp numbers that I used.

Hose: 632050 Qty: 2
Inverted Flare Male: 640380 Qty: 1
Inverted Flare Female: 640610 Qty: 1
1/2npt x -6: Qty: 2
Hose End: 613160 Qty: 4
Wix Filter: 51622
Derale Filter Base: 15728

Fluid is always as clean as when I put it in.

Great post! Pics n part numbers n everything!

Is the filter mounted vertically or horizontally? I'm always concerned about things hanging down in the road debris/offroad smack zone.

The filter is mounted vertically. I haven't experienced any filter damage in the 5 years that I have had it.

Location snug as a bug in a rug. And serviceable! Reps.

If you don't already have one, a trans cooler from a 6.0 is a major, tranny saving upgrade. If you install one I'd route the filter pre-cooler, to protect it from friction debris. The passages are tiny.

Thanks. Yeah, I'm on limited funds so I went with the Tru-Cool tranny cooler. I've had no temp issues with it so I would recommend it also to anyone who needs to watch their budget also.

Y2KW57 had a question about if I rerouted the factory hard lines. I did not alter the factory hard lines. I just removed the return line from the transmission. There is enough play in the line that you can pull it away from the transmission and make all of your connections. I was fortunate enough that I have an exhaust clamp close to the transmission line and I was able to attach a small clamp to it to add support to the removed transmission line (as referenced in one of the pictures). I should have explained better that the basis for my thread was that I think I improved on the design of the kits offered on all the diesel web sites but it is installed the same manner. You could reference any of their instructions. I apologize for the vague thread. I was watching 3 small grandchildren when I posted and I just lost my train of thought. Hope this answered your questions.
