Intake Options

I am searching for an OEM Excursion intake to replace the POS Airaid system the previous owner installed, and most of what I am finding are ebay auctions for 5.4 F250/350 intakes. Was there a filter element or MAF size difference between the 6.8 and 5.4?

And before it is asked, no I have not tried the local pick and pull yet. Also, I have no use for oiled or dry washable filters, they let too much fine dust through for a vehicle that will spend a large portion of its life off-highway in the desert.

Have you thought about a pre-filter sock over your filter element?

I have, and I won't. I don't find any value at all in a filter element that can't filter fine dust without a pre-filter. If I'm going to do that, it will have a hole cut in the hood for a donaldson dust ejector pre-filter.

Well gee, welcome to the party !g I would certainly think that a oiled K&N would be better in those conditions then not? And your p.o.s. Airaid may not be the correct for your particular application. But just maybe if you share some details ie Engine, Trans, Gears, Mods etc then we're here, as soon as we figure the value in all this !

K&N are significantly worse for fine dust and particulate bypassing the filter media even when "correctly" oiled. They are an amazing example of how marketing works. The easiest way to see how worthless any of the aftermarket filters are is to use one for a day in the desert and see how much dust and dirt are inside the intake downstream from the filter.

I was able to track down an OEM 6.8L air cleaner assembly.

Realistically, MOST filters aren't designed for desert applications. Even OEM.

I ran an AFE for a very short while. After only a few thousand miles, there was a layer of fine dust past the filter so I sold it. Only OEM paper filters for me from now on. The small gains on these aftermarket intakes are not worth dusting your engine in my opinion.

Your talking cold air intakes correct?

I had no idea that those intakes allowed that much past the filter. I've run a K&N since buying my truck new in 02 and haven't had any issues with dirt in intake other than the tarnish one get's on the throttle plates. But thanks for the info !
