I just barely boughtt a 1996 F-250 PSD and i'm looking to put an intake under the hood. I'm interested in the AFE Stage II Intake, but i've always used K&N. I've also heard AFE makes better intakes for diesels. Is this just personal preference? what do you guys think?
k+n bad for diesels. other will no agree with me but i have replaced 2 engines becuase the custmoers put k+n Drop in filter and dusted the engine. AFE would be better but in my opinion Cuda-jim is right on kwik filter or a tymar is best. A tymar setup is sold as a kit that looks just liek the filter i show in my gallery pic but i built this one myself. the Kwik filter is very inexpensive and the tymar is a bit more but is still over $100 less than many afe's i have seen.
one of the major problems is with the drop-ins. mainly cause the stock airboxes are junk but there is something to be said for the filter material itself since all the other powerstroke i work on still have the factory airbox except mine and i haven't ahd to replace those engines. also this goes for any washable filter. i just can't see spending all that time to proper wash a filter. it easy but its still time consuming waiting for the filter to dry after cleaning it and all that. what do you do in the mean time? i prefer to replace a 20 paper filter that is made by one of the best heavy duty filter makers around (the 6637 filter is made by donaldson, doesn't matter whose box its in!) oh i jsut realized i haven't told you that the tymar and the kwik filter are both using a napa (wix) filter number 6637. thats my honest opinion.

I'd have to agree, I had to buy an air filter, the place I went ot had K&N on sale to the point it was only a $22 difference so I said what the hell, I also wanted to keep the factory box for the look of it. I pulled the filter out when I got home and the first thing I had to do was apply this grease all over the seal to prevent dirt blow by on the seal of this K&N filter, the filter look straight and true, I can see why this grease would improve this seal, so I did the intructions as told, applied this grease, closed this box up and tightened the lid, then I removed this lid and I couldnt believe that only 2/3rds of the filter would make contact to the filter box, I tried installing it numoruos times, but no seal.........finally sealed the filter with some one sided foam tape, pressed down all I could and was able to tighten the screws, checked it over and now its sealed. the filter seams to be doing good, just give it a good oiling, I dont give a **** if it is factory pre-oiled
Factory airboxes are a known leak spot. Additionally, the "snorkle" that passes for an intake vent severely restricts the ability of the engine to breath.
An open element filter, such as the Tymar or the home made Kwikk, increase the amount of air that can be drawn into the engine and are much less likely to leak.
There has been discussion from time to time about the "hot" air under the hood that is drawn in by an open element filter vs the "cool" air that is provided by the factory box snorkle. Several people have done experiments to determine the difference in air temp under the hood vs outside air. The consensus opinion was that while underhood air is quite a bit hotter while standing at an idle there is only about 10 degrees difference when running at highway speeds. Since the biggest impact of using hotter intake air is increased EGT and the most likely time for EGT problems is when running at highway speed while towing or hauling a heavy load, the open element filter should have minimum impact.
