Looking for a replacement 6.2
Hi guys,
Well it looks like my 2015 6.2 is on it's last legs, oil consumption going up and it clatters like a diesel when warm. Had a hard early life, looks like the previous owner mistreated it. Only has 130k km. Pretty bummed but learned my lesson about not having a pre-purchase inspection done.....
It's a great build though (Supercrew shortbox XLT with almost all the options, rigged up for a truck camper) so I've decided to keep it and swap the engine.
Does anyone know of a good source for documented low-miles 6.2s in the PacNW? Would need the name of a good shop in the Tacoma-Seattle area too that would be able to do the work. Got some early pricing in for $7k swapped on a used one which seems way too high to me. And new comes in around 10k.....
Cheers

Before putting a new motor in, pull the valve cover. We have a 2015 here at work that was burning oil big time. The oil was never changed in it, due to a old lazy truck shop employee that was about to retire and was fudging paperwork. They were in the process of changing perfectly good valve seals when I told them to check the pcv baffles. Sure enough, the drain hole in the baffle was clogged with sludge. It was sucking oil in the pcv system. Check all the rocker arms and valve springs while your in there. There was also a batch of valve covers with defective baffles. There is actually a TSB for this.
I would make sure it isn't just a timing chain tensioner making your noise as well. I've yet to hear of a bottom end failure on a 6.2. Now if you ran it dry if oil, that may be a different story.

2x ...the above is good advice.
Check the PCV system before condemning the engine due to oil use.
The noise might be a broken valve spring; rare but not unheard of. Tension-er as well.
Probably far cheaper to repair these issues than what you might think.
However, if you do indeed really need a different motor, I'd say spend the cash (if you have it) and get a good reman unit from Jasper or other source. Given the relatively new age of the truck, and presuming you'll want to keep it a long time, I'd not get some junk-yard engine. Reman'd engines come with pretty good warranty coverage; often better than OEM. Jasper is 3 yr/100k miles!

Hi guys,
Thanks alot for the advice and links, will start looking for cheaper new or reman options, any other links would be appreciated if you can think of 'em. That warranty with Jasper is a big draw, I will check with them. I changed the PCV last June, and the valve covers were done under the TSB a year ago, no change and the oil use continues to get worse.
Clattering noise starts up only after it warms up, not noticable when cold. I'm thinking probably not springs or tensioner on that account, but maybe viscocity has an impact. Was thinking it was a cam phaser but they seem to have fixed the issue on the 6.2 relative to the 5.4. And would probably be throwing codes, which it is not.
Will pull the valve covers and check around. Only other symptom I can think of is that is sometimes burns a bit of blue at start-up after it has been parked downhill, nose down, overnight. Otherwise if parked level, I never notice any blue smoke at start-up. Maybe a valve guide is done at the front of the engine?
Thanks again for your help
