Android Auto seems to be super sensitive to the phone going into any mode that turns off apps - e.g. battery saver mode, etc. If you are having issues, try disabling all battery saving capabilities and see if that helps. If it does, you can still use battery saver, but turn it off in app settings for the key apps (like Waze). This is what was causing Waze to lock up for me on a Samsung S8+. Once I turned off battery saver, perfect.

Add Waze under here:
.Settings
..Device Maintenance
...Battery
....Unmonitored Apps (Select apps that won't be suggested to put to sleep / These apps can use as much power as they want and App power monitor will not do anything to stop them)
(The above is for Android 8.0.0 on a Samsung S9 Plus)

I went in and found battery optimized apps section in Android 9 on pixel 2xl and sure enough Waze/google maps/Android auto/play music we're all set to be "optimized" so I unchecked them and so far so good with no disconnecting but I haven't had a chance to drive longer then 20minutes yet...but I think you hit the nail on the head with this and Android "optimizing"
