I know that the heat riser Is on the exhaust to get the engine warmed up faster but my question is.....If the heat riser is not functioning will the motor rung ok after running for a while or will the motor not run smoothly. So, is the heat riser really necessary?
I would post a pic but I don't have one right now.
thanks

No, not really necessary - once the heat riser opens fully then it is (almost) like it's not there. It is not needed once the engine is warmed up and lots of people run without them. If the heat riser is rusted/frozen open it doesn't cause any harm but if it is rusted shut or the spring is broken then it can at least partially block the exhaust on that side so sometimes they can do more harm than good, too.
