Question Heat Riser

Can anyone tell me what purpose the heat riser serves on the exhaust of a 65 Ford F 100? Is it going to effect performance if new exhaust is put on and not replaced? Thank you in advance!

Supposedly helps the engine warm up. Only used on 1965/67 F100/350 352's. None after 1967 in F100/350's with 360/390's.

Usually rusts up solid in the open position. If redoing the exhaust, toss the puppy into the circular file.

The heat riser's job is to block off one side of the exhaust, forcing hot gases through the crossover passage in the intake manifold. This is to aid cold weather driveability by helping the intake & carb warm up faster. They were actually used up till the mid-80's. As NumberDummy stated, after a while they're usually rusted solid-you're better off just to pitch it.
