I have a 1994 E-150 5.8 EEC-IV with ECU F4TF-12A650-MB
EFI-SD48B
Speed Density
When purchased two years ago, it had bad capacitors, which I replaced and has worked fine since, although I'm not impressed with the E4OD shifting points or torque converter lockup behavior..
Is there another ECU possibly from another Ford vehicle that can improve shifting and/or performance. Lightning comes to mind. I plan to purchase a spare, install it, and keep the one I repaired that's in it now.
Check your TPS and make sure it is within specs. An out of range throttle position sensor can translate into to bad shifting as the computer rely on those inputs to command the transmission to shift. Same applies for the vehicle speed sensor on rear axle.
I have driven other Fords (mainly trucks) with EEC-IV and the E4OD transmissions, and mine seems to match their sluggish shifting and torque converter lock-up behavior. Mine pulls a loaded trailer and hills fine, and using the OD off button makes it more workable. I remember driving a friends '94 Lightning truck years ago that IIRC, had crisper shifting. My van has a 3.55 differential. I can live with stock performance, and have read about soft shifts and transmission protection, but was wondering about possible ECU substitutes for possible recycle yard replacements. My ECU is one of the cheaper ones from retail parts stores rebuilt offerings.
