Trying to fix my 97' F-250 5.8, e4od. The e4od won't shift out of first gear half the time. It is fine when I manually select 1 or 2 when the problem happens, no check engine though. The fluid looks great and doesn't have an odor. Here is a video of it failing to shift
Having a scan tool that can read transmission codes and watch the data stream would be the best way to figure out whats going on, this is more likely a control problem like a speed sensor or something.

The overdrive light isn't blinking. Do I check the transmission codes normally by grounding the eec scanner port and counting the check engine blinls?
I am not sure if you can get the codes that way with that vehicle, the more important info will come from the data stream, you will be able to see if the computer is commanding the transmission to shift or not and if not then you can watch your speed signal and other inputs used by the computer to operate the transmission.
If you dont have a scanner the only thing I would try first would be the vehicle speed sensor, I would take it out and clean it if it has a lot of debris stuck to it or just replace it and see what happens. The sensor could be located on the top of the rear differential or on the transmission or transfer case.

Could you send me the link for a scan tool that would work on my vehicle?
I have always used scanners that are designed for nonstop use in a shop, the one I have now I have about 8k invested in and I will probably update it soon. It wouldn't make since to buy a high end scanner like mine for your situation. You will just have to do some research on what scanners will give you the info you need at a reasonable cost.
Maybe start a new thread about what scanners will allow you read transmission codes and data streams for Ford vehicles. I am sure people on this site have already figured out which ones will suite your needs. Sorry I cant help you in this area, but post back up any codes or readings you may have questions on.
IIRC that's an OBD1 truck. Using the often-recommended and highly praised Equus 3145 will get your codes even if your engine light ain't on (assuming it has any codes in memory, which it might).
Took it out on the highway and tried to get it through all the gears (instead of just trying to take it easy annd it never wanting to get into 2nd) and it seems like it is shifting through all the gears but extremely early. Could it be caused by the 633 code?
