Where's my (ATF) fluid?

I have a '78 F250 with a 460 engine and a C6 tranny. It came with a towing package from the dealer and has an external tranny cooler up front. I drained the fluid yesterday; dropped the pan, drained the torque converter and also undid the hoses at the oil cooler and let it all drain out. I measured what came out, carefully (gawd what a mess), and it comes out to just a touch more than 8.5 quarts. The problem is that I didn't measure this up front and just dumped in 12 quarts of fresh fluid when I was done. I'd read in the owner's manual that the capacity is 12.5 quarts and I figured I'd bring it up to full slowly with that last 1/2 quart - if needed. Now it appears that I might have over-filled it. Not 100% sure, but it reads high when warm. So where are the 3 extra quarts of fluid? And what's going to happen now that I've over-filled it?

The full capacity is if you drained the torque converter, cooler, etc. It is not good for it to run over the recommended fluid level- 3 quarts is WAY too much and it needs to come out. The cleanest way to get the extra back out is to run some tubing down the dipstick tube and use a hand pump.

Undue the cooler line and pump out 3 quarts.

I *did* drain all of these things, which is why I'm confused that it seems like 9 quarts is all I need. I will get a narrower hose for my siphon pump tomorrow and draw out 3 quarts, then fiddle with the final top off.

What a PITA

Be sure you have the proper dipstick and are checking it correctly.

it depends on what pan is there. 4x4 had a deeper pan therefore held more "quarts" Does yours have the deeper or the shallower pan? You have no way totell unless you have seen both, I have needed asmuch as 15 quarts in a c6 if empty and has higher capacity cooler along with deep pan. good luck. I have ran themover filled and they just leak out the vent in the side usually, but probably better to have it right.

Still confused

I appreciate the feedback guys. Normally I don't feel quite this stupid, but I still am struggling with this. I pulled 3 quarts out today, ran it up to temp, seemed low, added 1/2, drove it around, still seemed low so added another 1/2.

Seems to shift well, but honestly the fluid color is so light when hot, I can't really tell exactly where it is. I don't see and fluid venting, but he'll if I know.

Did you check it hot before you drained it? If not, maybe you were low before and did not know it.
How high on the dipstick were you reading? You know those hash marks are more looking at PINTS than QUARTS, correct? If it was just a bit high then, and you pulled out three full quarts, that would explain why it was so low this last time.

Unless you can verify you have the wrong dipstick, test it again while still warm and get the readings to the top line or whatever the marks indicate.
If you can see a part number stamped on to the stick, post it up and maybe someone here will verify that you have the correct dipstick for your setup.

I did NOT check it hot before draining it - mea culpa, I wish I had. I also did not realize it was pints, not quarts. That was stupid of me. Attached are some pictures that show details. FYI that the fluid on the stick is a cold reading, which I know is irrelevant. I'll try to take one hot later today.

Good pic of the number. Thanks.
It's at least in the correct range, being a '77 designed part. I don't know the exact number sequence that says it's for a C6 in a particular application, but I'm sure several people here can verify if it's correct from that number.

Clean fluid at this point!
