changing fuel filter need help

I bought a motorcraft filter kit the filter under the hood and the one in the water separator. I watched a few youtubes and they said about 2.5 quarts will drain out of the separator then you can take it apart replace the filter. I just drained two gallons and its still going. What am doing wrong.

Thanks Jeff

I've found that loosening the bowl a few turns before opening the valve works best. Once fuel has come out of the valve for a minute I start twisting the bowl off and the fuel supply will stop.

Did you change the upper filter first? I think that causes the free flow. I also think some have taken the fuel cap off to stop the siphoning. I wish I could help more. When I changed mine I did the bottom separator first, made sure my fuel was at a quarter tank and truck was level. I only had a quart or so drain. Wish you luck!

Same thing happened to me. No worries. The few times I drain d the water only a couple quarts came out. Just last week I went to change the fuel filter right after filling up. That was a mistake as 2 gallons came out and was still going. Closed it up and will wait until I burn some more fuel.

ETA.. I think the post above about opening the cap is good advice. I didn't think of that.

You need to disconnect a line above the fuel filter on the tanks. Some early build trucks do not have a check valve and will drain until lower level in the truck. Mine is like this. I have found if i run the truck to a 1/4 tank left it wont do it. If you have a full tank you need to disconnect i believe the most left line while looking at the rear of the truck and it will not drain that much. You should see 3 lines on top of the lower filter housing. slide out the locking tab and disconnect the line then drain fuel and remove filter.

Could someone explain the whole check valve thing? The fuel flowing when draining the filter flows in the same direction as normal operation. The air entering the tank is flowing the normal way as well. How does a check valve prevent the siphon?

No definition of "early build" though.

That may have been applicable to 2017 Job 1 trucks. My 2017 is a Job 2 and I only drained about 2 quarts from the water separator the first time I opened the valve. I did not disconnect anything else, but I also don't recall how full my tank was.

I'm pretty sure mine is a Job 1 truck (Dec 2016 build). When I drained the fuel from the separator only a limited amount of fuel came out. Less than a quart. I'm hoping that means changing the filter will be easy with a similar small amount of fuel to deal with.

my 15k change was 3 gallon mess and now that i am approaching the 30k mark, I am less than thrilled to take a diesel bath in the drive.

If I am reading everything right, this should be a safe order for a job 1 truck.
1) 1/4 tank or less of fuel
2) open fill cap
3) disconnect the middle line from the filter at the tank (thank you Quattro)
4) drain it
5) drop it / replace it
6) do the underhood

The last one I did on my previous truck only took about 20 minutes. I found loosening the bowl some before starting the drain wastes less diesel. After it drains for a minute I unthread the bowl almost all the way and the diesel stops flowing.

Follow up
Before continuing I read the first couple of replies and I went ahead and dropped the bowl and about 2 more quarts came out. Total 2.5 gallons of fuel.
I did not touch the filter under the hood until finished the separator filter. Upper under hood filter was simple and no mess.
My truck build date is Nov 2016

Thanks for the responses

Jeff
