It's a good idea to drain the water separator while you're changing the fuel filter. Quite often, opening the drain will require you to crack open the filter housing to get the drain flowing anyway.

I have found that if you try to put the new dry fuel filter in with the bowl full of fuel, the new filter will displace the fuel and then you have a mess to clean up. Better to drain and install the new filter when empty.

it all depends on how much time you have. all suggestions here will work. I am always in a hurry that i just let the fuel pull the filter in and then i dont have a mess. i do drain if i see water and or dirt in the bowl

If you drain and then install the filter, you are sure all of the fuel getting to the injectors has been filtered.

All the junk that's behind the filter that isn't trapped will mix with the filtered fuel. First time you fire her up, guess were it goes? It doesnt' take that long. Injectors ain't cheap!

Not too far, really. It's on the other side of Puget Sound from me, but it would only take less than an hour to get there from here.
