I have a '15 F-450 KR that's been a fantastic truck. Actually it's been the best pickup I've ever owned. I usually trade every four years. I have a 6/65000 ESP on the truck. I've read where the ten speed trans will be offered and probably some cosmetic changes on the '20's. The '19 should have most of the bugs worked out by now. Considering the value of my current truck will continue to drop while the prices will rise on the new trucks, should I go ahead and order a '19 or wait for the '20 models to come out? Even as good as my '15 has been I won't keep it after the warranty is out.
Personally I would wait until the 2020 confirmed changes roll out. Should still have plenty of time to jump into a 19' if the '20 doesn't appeal to you.
Negatives: You mention bugs worked out. But a new 10-speed and some cosmetic changes mean some things are starting all over from scratch.
Positives: Selling a truck with lots of extended warranty is a big plus to a new buyer. I know its not the most financially wise decision but its a huge part of why I buy the ESP. Mine is under Premium Care until 2025.
Personally, if I was getting a gas motor, the 10 speed would be welcome. If you are sticking with a 6.7 F450, I'd rather have the tried and true 6 speed. The 6.7 has a very wide and flat power curve, so more gears won't matter too much. This is especially true if your final drive ratio matches your desired mountain pull speed. For example, my F450 makes over 90% of its peak HP in 5th gear from 62 -75 MPH. Another gear wouldn't really help me much.
I had the same dilemma and decided to go with the tried and true 6.2/6 spd set up. Not going to take a chance on a new engine or transmission until it's been out a few years. There will always be something new, on the way, bigger, better.......at some point you have decide what will work for you and get on with it.
Have you tried the 10 speed? I drove a 150 loaner this week when my truck was working in the shop...didn’t like it at all. I had a ‘15 f150 and like the 6 spd better. Felt like that truck couldn’t find the right gear...was either too much or too little.

I have. Don't like it either. It's always shifting. That's why I think I'm going with a 19... plus I like the sound of a gasser winding out in a gear at wot. The 10 speed shifted so fast it didn't have a chance lol
No question, I’m waiting.
Im not interested in a 19’ when a drive train update and fresh styling is right around the corner.
With GM and Ram introducing new redesigned trucks, I’m expecting more power and noticeable styling improvements, along with a new interior.
Comparing the future 10 speed calibrated to a 950+ tq engine to a small gasoline engine is not a valid comparison by any stretch of the imagination. Big rigs run 18 speeds for one reason, you can zero into the tuned sweet spot window. The truck will be an incredible tow machine. Imagine a RPM torque window where the transmission keeps the RPM flat right through the gears, with an engine able to accelerate as smooth as glass.
I understand and those who like what they have. The same guys who never buy the first year, but I opt for the new stuff and bet on it without hesitation.
I’m waiting and I’m very excited about the 2020 model , the new gas motor and a 10 speed auto and I’m sure some other awesome updates. It’s a big purchase for me and I definitely want to get the latest generation powertrain. If the powertrain is new for 2020 my truck will be current and relevant for 10 years plus. That’s a huge selling point to me with the purchase price of these new trucks.

If you look at the F150 forum there seem to be some issues reported with the 10 spd tranny as well. Might need to work the kinks out.
I wouldn't even consider the 2020 personally. I would like to see a couple years on the new power train and transmission. That is why I bought an 18 so in 4 or 5 years I'll see how things are holding up on the new trucks.
Anybody that’s considering waiting until 2020 to jump on the new 10 speed right out of the gate, I would recommend going and talking to the mechanics at you’re dealership. I deal with mechanics for work, and every ford dealership I go to they are saying they have been working on a bunch of F150s with the 10 speed because of various clutch and valve issues. Not sure I would want a truck with those tranny issues and add in 900+ lb/ft of torque. Not a grenade I want to jump on.
Go buy the 2020, and be the guinea pig, for the rest of us..
Engine's that have a narrow powerband ( indy car engines ) need a lot of gears to keep the engine on the powerband. Imho is a new 10 speed is 4 more things to go wrong..
I'll stick to tried and true, reliability means more than the latest high tech.
the only way a 10spd would make any sense at all is if it had the ability to skip gears unloaded. reportedly rams 8spd will have this feature. sounds like f150 doesnt have this ability and is likely its downfall

The problem with this statement is that you are assuming the new diesel 10 speed transmission that will handle over 1000 lbs of torque is the same unit that Ford installs behind their tiny little V-6.
Its not.
With multiple gears available, I won’t be shocked if there is two totally different transmission programs available to the driver from a switch. Not like the current RPM adjustment. A real towing program that avoids the high and unnecessary RPM of the 6 speed. One which uses all of the gears effectively in order to be highly fuel efficient..
The other, for fuel mileage by taking advantage of unloaded lower RPM. Fuel is “relatively” cheap right now. Don’t rule out a potential fuel spike at some point in our crazy world.
I get it. Some guys have a fresh payment book, and naturally are unaccepting of the most major upgrade in two decades. This upgrade may not match up with their trade schedule, and it sucks to see something so new come out when you have four or five more years to go with the old stuff. The nay sayers are always the same guys that were afraid of the 5 speed, and then the 6 speed, usually because they just bought a 4 or 5 speed.
Dont kid yourself on what Ford and GM have riding on this new transmission....
Everything is riding on this. Since this transmission was a joint effort between Ford and GM, collaborating on this project is highly unusual and is an indicator that a lot of bright minds have done their homework to get it right as this is the new foundation for now, and for the next 10 years of 1000+ tq and reliability.
Personally, I’m excited about the new power potential for the future. The 6 speed has been the weak link in torque upgrades. The 10 speed opens the door to 1000lbs+.
