you would expect some end shake.. You would not expect up and down play on the shaft. If you have a "clunk" inside, it might be related to the 4 x 4 engagement.. Vacuum operated piston strokes the engagement rod/ pin... make sure it is free and easily moves from the outside..

Passenger side doesn't have any play, just drivers side. when I drive over small bumps I can hear the clunk. it pushes the CVC joint in. do I have to get inside the diff? to work on it, or should I just let it ride for awhile and see if it gets worse? it isn't leaking. Thank you for response
