Sorry to be posting so much. I’m new to the trucks so I have a lot of questions and this truck is kind of a pain in the butt.
While working to to get the drivers side exhaust manifold off so I could Heli oil the flange threads, I noticed the very front bolt boss on the upper intake plenum is cracked and looks separated from the rest of the plenum. I sprayed carb cleaner on the crack while it was running and it’s not sucking air.
My problem is that I have a rather substantial valve cover gasket leak on the passenger side which would require removal of the plenum.
And although it’s not leaking now, I’m not confident it will seal back up with a new gasket.
What do you all suggest short of having a fab shop weld it up.
JB Weld?
RTV the crap out of it when I put it back together?
i got the truck as to be a garbage/farm truck for $500 so I’m not trying to spend a ton on this thing.
I prefer JB weld brand Steel Stik. Knead it then apply to the crack with the manifold off of course, let cure for 24 hours then sand it down. Works wonders.
I'd go grab one from a junkyard. There's bound to be plenty of them around. Shouldn't cost you more than $20 or $25 if you pull it yourself.
i didn’t even think of that! Checked my local pick n pulls websit and they show an intake for 38.99 plus 4.99 core. Seems kinda steep but certainly a better option!
If I had to take the core back out to where I go, they would pocket my $4.99 because it wouldn't be worth the trip. They probably count on that more than getting a few lbs of metal back. Those guys don't leave a lot of meat on the bone with those cars. LQK salvage (a public company) has several pick and pull places in Houston and they are in other cities and states. Their revenue last year was 2.47 Billion. I'm not calling them a junk yard anymore

I probably will not take my old intake Plenum back when I pick up a new one.
but I did find that the Plenum was leaking severely. Not from the crack. The bonehead that had this truck before me decided to not use the rear two bolts to the Plenum. It was sucking tons of air through the back. After I replaced all the bolts, the idle settled down and everything is good.
