96 e150 engine replacement

Hello Ford forum. So I just bought a 96 e150 with the 4.9 engine. It’s got 200k on the odo and it has a slight knock at idle that seems to go away when driving. It also has quite a few oil leaks (front and rear crank seal, etc) and according to the owner it has not had an oil change in a very long time. I am guessing that it would be more cost effective for me to just replace he engine rather than fix it since it sounds like it has been abused, and was wondering how easy it is to swap to a 5.8, or if it’s even worth it.

Also what is the best way to do the engine swap at home without a lift? I’m assuming it can’t just be pulled out the top with a cherry picker since the van is a snub nose. I have done a few engine swaps, but never on a van.

Also mine has a c6 transmission, can I use an engine that was mated to a c4? Or is the bolt pattern different?

The 351 uses the same bell as the 300. Different flexplate though. I pulled a 302 from a 92 van and did it from the front. The radiator support boltd in that one. You will need the whole wiring harness for a 351 I'm thinking to do the swap, and the motor mounts

Maybe he plans to take it out through the door. (engine only, trans unbolted)

Only way to do that is to drop the transmission completely. Even then it's likely not going to happen with the longer 300 six. Ain't easy with a 302.

I saw a video on Youtube that was done by a shop. They found it was faster and easier to lift the body to remove/replace the engine. I couldn't find that exact video for you, but here are some ideas:

It has to come out the front. You won't get it out from the inside or bottom. You remove the grille, radiator, front core support upper crossbar. I also pull the hood just to get it completely out of the way. Even though you probably wouldn't have to. Then you need to pull at least the upper intake off, to have room to lift the engine. But I prefer to pull all the manifolds off and pull the head off off before I pull the engine. This gives you so much more room to lift the engine. It makes life much, much easier. Then you need a engine hoist. Use a couple of the head bolts and a strong chain. Make the chain as short as possible but still reach from one end of the block to the other. That will give you the most lifting room to get the engine out.

Pulling the body off a older van can be a nightmare. You are lifting a very heavy large object. You need a place to do it. You need the equipment to do it safely. Then there is all the stuff to disconnect from the body to lift it off the chassis. And then there's dealing with all the old body mounts & bolts. I can't even count how many body mounts/bolts I've had to cut to get them out. Not my idea of easier just to do an engine swap/replacement on a push rod engine equipped van. On a newer van with a mod motor or a Powerstroke diesel sure, but not the older ones.

Now you don't know how bad I want to pull the body off my 89 E350. But I'm doing a ground up mechanical rebuild with rear axle swap and transmission swap. But I don't have the space to do it. And the city would throw a fit if I did this in my driveway!
