1991 E4OD

Aloha,
Out here in Hawaii parts are hard to find and shipping is expensive.
my 1991 Ford F150 Lariat has a 302 and an e4od. The transmission was shifting hard then one morning it wouldn't go into reverse and was stuck in drive in neutral.
I parked the truck and found a parts truck I was going to take the tranny out of.
I'm wondering if the e4od is a good Transmission in general? I'm thinking now would it be better to just rebuild the one for my truck?
I've seen a lot of kits for my transmission and I know a really great mechanic who can rebuild mine.

What's the best thing I can do for my truck?
It's in Immaculate condition and the motor is strong.

You're jumping to conclusions, for some reason E4OD trucks seem to suffer more from electrical control issues than the 4R70w trucks but bottom line is a sensor fault or wiring issue(corrosion or rodent damage) could cause the symptoms you have so you need to pull codes and post up what you find. The obvious suspect is the MLPS sensor but engine sensors like the TPS or issues with the speed sensor or PSOM in the dash cluster could also contribute.

I hear what you're saying. That's interesting. It was shifting pretty hard before it locked up. Also I had the filter changed at the shop and had a flush done, I was told sometimes that's not the best thing to do.
I really want to take care of this truck and do whatever I need to do including upgrade it so it'll last a long time...it has hardly any rust and everything is really tight.

Does this mean you couldn't shift into R or when you did,nothing happened? Why worded in the past tense? Does it now?

Was, meaning it used to be? It's not longer stuck? How could it be stuck in D while in N at the same time?

Is your shift handle stuck? Did you unhook the shift linkage cable down by the trans and try moving the linkage by hand? If that still doesn't move,did you drop the pan to inspect the linkage and detent spring? Perhaps it's broke?

I put it in D it went forward...I then put it in neutral to roll back n reposition... shift lever went to N granny stayed in D. Put it in reverse it acted like neutral. Back in N it went forward. In R it went nowhere again.

Maybe your shift cable is out of adjustment.Does it hold itself in park or does it roll? Will the truck start in N position?
Look up above your brake pedal for these screws.



If loose,remove them and apply some lock-tight and snug them back up then make sure the shift cable is adjusted correctly so each gear is correct.The adjustment is down by the shift linkage.Chock the wheels both directions.Pull out on the white clip and while someone adjusts the shift handle,you adjust the shift linkage so N is really N and re-insert the clip.Shift through the gears and make sure the indicator lines up to each gears nicely and make sure the truck starts easily in N and park,especially making sure you don't need to hold up on the handle in P to start the truck.Make any adjustments needed.

I will certainly try that and go through those motions. Honestly it's shifted beautifully as far as the lever it was the tranny that was shifting really hard before this happened. I'll definitely give it a look and give it a try I was under the impression this had electronic shift not mechanical shift so this should be interesting thank you very much!

what does chalk the wheels both directions mean?

Keep the truck from rolling in either direction so the guy under the truck can't get run over.

He meant chock the wheels. When you chalk the wheels you put a chalk mark on the tires.

Everything said above about the shifter cable and screws doesn’t apply to his truck, he has a 91 which is all mechanical linkages coming out of the steering column under the hood.

Reverse is purely hydraulic on these trans so if you lost reverse the trans needs to come out and get fixed.

edit: is your truck 4x4? Transfer cases have been known once in a blue moon to fail and allow the truck to only move in one direction (very rare though).

Thanks I really appreciate that. I did shifted into all positions and the tranny shifts in sync with each one. It is a four by four.


My next question is:
What's a really good rebuild kit for this tranny to make it possibly stronger then it was originally?

I spelled chalk wrong myself no biggie I got the point. Far as editing I don't follow you.
I'm going to have a mechanic look at the tranny now and see if it can be rebuilt or if it is indeed something else wrong.
Can someone recommend a quality rebuild kit please?

As you read, the E4OD is controlled by the PCM. I had the hard shifting on my old 93 and had the trans rebuilt without checking the PCM. When they rebuilt it, it still did exactly the same thing. I pulled the pcm computer out and the capacitors had broken connections. I replaced it and it has worked perfect since. Some folks can replace the pcm capacitors. I don't trust myself with electrical so I got one at O'rileys. Maybe you can avoid my costly mistake. Sandy
