As you read, the E4OD is controlled by the PCM. I had the hard shifting on my old 93 and had the trans rebuilt without checking the PCM. When they rebuilt it, it still did exactly the same thing. I pulled the pcm computer out and the capacitors had broken connections. I replaced it and it has worked perfect since. Some folks can replace the pcm capacitors. I don't trust myself with electrical so I got one at O'rileys. Maybe you can avoid my costly mistake. Sandy
Edit as in changed chalk to chock after you had quoted. It would still have the typo in your quote since that’s how it was originally.
That E4OD is computer controlled. If there is a bad sensor or wire, the computer may not know what gear it is supposed to be in. As has been stated rebuilding the transmission will not fix a possible broken wire in the harness and you will still have the same problem except with a much lighter wallet.

Everything said above about the shifter cable and screws doesn’t apply to his truck, he has a 91 which is all mechanical linkages coming out of the steering column under the hood.
Reverse is purely hydraulic on these trans so if you lost reverse the trans needs to come out and get fixed.
edit: is your truck 4x4? Transfer cases have been known once in a blue moon to fail and allow the truck to only move in one direction (very rare though).
Oh yeah he's got an 8th gen.Doesn't sound good then.No adjustments down on the shift linkage though? How do you line up your shift indicator? Your right though, reverse should be in there somewhere regardless.
