Angry e4od

recently installed a reman jasper e4od because at 140,000 the old one self destructed!i use my truck to plow and with the old trans it was extremly slow going into reverse.thought the new one would be different, while it is faster, it still is slow compared to other trucks i've drove.are these trans known for this or is there a simple fix?it does have a banks transcommand hooked up.

My 94 E4OD shifted into reverse relatively quickly, less than half a second. It did this before and after a rebuild a few years ago. Some trannies are slow, but usually they will shift in less than a second.

Trannies that take a long time to shift into reverse, say a second or more, worry me. A long time ago, a tranny shop told me that was a sign that things were going south(I think he said it was a weak pump). May not be your problem but I would take it up with Jasper. I assume it is still under warranty. Make sure it is documented that you had concerns about this since if it does blow up prematurely you might have a claim.

Good Luck,

Jim Henderson

thanks for the reply,i will ask my jasper dealer to document the problem.i did find two very small metal pieces when i did the first oil and filter change almost looked like pieces from a planetary gearset,my dealer has this on file already, maybe i should have gone with the ford reman but jasper had a better warr.guess only time will tell!

BTW, if you plow with this truck, and have tranny problems again, you may want to look into a C6, that is a good strong tranny.

But I have also seen filters cause slow shifting into gears. Does it shift easy and quickly into the foward gears?

The slow reverse to drive is normal for that trans and jumping on the throttle before it hooks up is not a good thing to do as it tears off the splines from a planetary gear at the output shaft.

I have nothing to offer, but wondered what Jasper set you back for that tranny?

I thought they did a good job on my "new 4.9L for $1653.00.

rancherman84!!!

Dude, you have the pre powerstroke diesel!

It does not require the computer to operate the engine!

Toss the automatic trans computer and sell it and the E4OD and slap in a C6 with a Gear Vendor OD unit!

I just built a HEAVY duty C6 that fits a 460, and sold the (retail price $800 and much more than you need) trans for $400 (the cost of parts without the torque converter) and a gear vendor costs $1500 to $2000!

You could have had that setup for at least $500 less than you paid for the E4OD!
Drive shaft length would be the only major problem (that and the shifter would be off for the number of gears in the trans) and should cost around $100 or so!
You could even use the OD switch to operate the Gear Vendor unit!

i kinda have a similar question, i have a 90 f-150 with 300-6 4x4,E40D. when i bought the truck the tranny had been serviced at 59,xxx, so i did a tranny service at 124,xxfilter, gasket, fluid) i can tell it has miles on it and the owner said it has lots of hiway miles on it. It goes into drive relatively nice, but lags goin into reverse, when they serviced it they didnt find anything unusual in the pan, nor have i seem to pull any fault codes. Sometimes when i go into reverse, it seems like it wants to die, most of the time it wont. Also there is slack in the driveline somewhere, all the u-joints are new.....maybe a pinion gear bad, tranny????

At that price I better start praying! I had no idea they were so expensive!! I like the 5 speed manually tranny idea too.

I hope you get the problem resolved , and Thx for the price info.

Going from an auto to a stick is an expensive hassle on a 2WD model, and even more so for 4WD!
Stick to auto isn't so bad as you can just pull one pedal out, but only if you feel the need!
And as far as slush boxes go, I feel the C6 is better than any stick shift!
You can rock it from forward to reverse faster than a stick shift when you are stuck, and it shifts faster in the 1/4 mile also!
Put a Gear Vendor on it and you get 6 forward speeds, and 2 in reverse!
You cant find any stick anywhere for your truck with 6 fwd and 2 rev!

Then again, a stick 5 speed with a Gear Vendor would be 10 fwd and 2 rev, but you still have to shift half of them manualy!
