have a misfire and check engine light so I went out and bought a code reader it only pulled one code (p0355 ignition coil E primary/secondary circuit) what does this mean? I have a faulty coil?
I’ve swapped cylinder 5 and cylinder 1 coil packs and the truck runs a lot better, before it was kinda sluggish now I spin the tires fairly easy. New coil packs and plugs coming soon.
The secondary circuit is the high voltage side of the coil. It could be a bad plug or coil. It could also be the boot on the coil. If swapping solved your problem then it's possible that the boot is bad and leaking the high voltage spark to ground. Generally these coils fail due to the high resistance from spark plugs that are worn and not changed regularly. It would be wise to change all plugs first. You may not need to replace all coils considering their cost.
Buy only motorcraft or denso coils. Denso makes the motorcraft coil for ford, and it is much cheaper under the denso brand than motorcraft. Also when we’re the last time plugs were changed?
If it came back with the coil that you swapped still in the 5 hole I would change that plug at a minimum with a motorcraft plug and see if it comes back again. If it does change the coil and go from there. What kind of plugs did you use when you changed them? Modular motors are picky about plugs.
He has an electrical circuit fault on cylinder #5. Focus on the COP, it's connector, its wiring pigtail, the wiring harness, and the PCM. Anything else is likely to be a red herring.
I don’t think the COP is the issue and the pigtail looks to be in good condition. Should I dig into the wiring harness and look for anything out of the ordinary?
It didn’t take much digging for me to find a problem, it also makes me wonder how it happened. I found a wire that looks like it was pinched or twisted to the point the wires weren’t even connected inside the insulation. I cut and reconnected the wire and the code has gone away again (hopefully it stays away) and The truck has more pickup and go to it again. I will need another pigtail because the wire is to short to tape up as it is basically reattached just behind the pigtail
