My 01 4.6 truck is running extremely ruff, it has 130k and is probably due for a tune up. I am hoping spark plugs are the only problem but do the coil packs go bad as well? My obd2 port is messed up too so I can't scan the truck to see what is wrong. Is their any other easy way to see if one of the coils is bad? How much do they cost? The truck is shaking pretty badly and has no power to speak of. Not that it had a whole lot before.
i just repaced my cops after a long time of trying to figure out what was wrong. mine didnt set any codes. replaced all eight cops and i havent had a problem. i got mine from summit racing. very happy $$. i bought the accel coils. if your having trouble replace the plugs and the coils. dont try and replace just one coil. even if you find the right one there are others that are not far behind.
I take it you COP's. and yes I agree with beer boy. If one has gone bad the others won't be far behind. I recently changed the plugs in my 97-4.6 and I changed wires and both coil packs. I bought an Ignition upgrade which has all 3 items and it was cheaper than buying seperatly.
Do you know if the plugs have ever been replaced? High mileage spark plugs as they wear will have an increasing plug gap. With 130K miles, if the plugs are orignal, the plug cap will be very wide. This can cause the COPs to be stressed trying to fire a plug with a gap that is too wide. COPs can fail, particularly when the engine is under load.
Therefore, you may need to replace both the plugs and the COPs to get the truck running smoothly again. Start with a good set of Motorcraft plugs. If you still have rough running issues, then replace the COPs. Good luck!
I bought the plugs and should replace them tonight if all goes well. I was going to try and clean up the connections on the cops at first and hope that does the trick. If they continue I found Accel replacements at Summit for only 25 bucks a peice.
You can also buy just the COP boots, which is as close to replacing spark plug wires as you can get, as cheap as aftermarket the COP's are now I'd just replace the whole thing though. It is too much of a PITA to go in to replace the plugs then do it all over again for the COP's a week later.
Since your OBDII is on the blink you could check it old school. Unplug the coil packs one at a time and run the motor to see if there is a problem child. The #5 COP is for some reason a typical 1st to fail in the 5.4s and of course it's a PIA to get at. I also in my truck after off roading accumulate water for some reason in the same location - the probable cause of the failure.
I agree that if you are going to get in there change the plugs and the COPs but if money is a factor changes the plugs and the one trouble maker...
Changed the plugs, the cops were fine and the truck runs much better now. Only problem is I couldn't get number 7 out. How did you guys get the cop off?
