They're leaking, haven't heard anyone say that they could hear it when they leaked and the turbo has to come off. Most, if not all, install bellowed up pipes because the factory style will eventually leak again.
For the amount of work to replace a donut, compared the cost of some Dorman uppies and the similar amount of time...go with the Dormans....around $150.
I replace the up pipes and the gaskets. I don't see any soot or anything that would lead me to believe they are still leaking. We pulled a 14k load 300 miles today and the egts are still high. Boost pressure did get better with the new pipes. Any suggestions on what to do next?
1200 on flat ground @ 65 mph. 70mph is over 1300.
It would bury the 1500 deg gauge on a 6% grade that's 1/2 mile long if I didn't let out. Boost gets up around 25 psi when pulling a hill
Yes you need new tunes. There was a guy on here years back, Dan, that had a F550 pulling his 5th wheel and had problems. He changed to Bills tunes, PHP and never had that problem again. At 70mph, what kind of rpm's are you running? You should have 538 gears if I remember right. That in it's self is running it on the edge. I'd keep it down a bit if it was me. That is with stock tires.
I believe the FIPW is still to high. This would make the timing off I believe. I'm not a specialist but this has been a problem in the pass. They make a 40 and even a 20 hp tunes but what you need is a better tuner. That truck with the gearing should pull those weights with no problem. This is the off the shelf tunes right? If so Contact one of the other tuners to reprogram it. PHP use to be great with this, not sure any more. But Gear Head and others should help you out. If you just changed gaskets for the up pipes they will leak in a short period of time. Most do. How was the ends where the gaskets go? You seem to be getting good boost so that is why I say about the tuning. HP numbers really mean nothing in the tow tunes. To much fuel at the wrong time makes heat. A good tow tune will get you to about 1100 egt or so and you will have good power.
I took it out loaded last night. The only time the egts really get high is pulling in 6th gear. I think I need some different tuning to get the boost higher in high gear if anything. The boost was actually at about 18 to 20 running 65 on flat ground. I think a better/different tuner might be what I'm looking.
Only in top gear sounds like RPMs are too low. But with 25 psi boost and 2500 or more RPMs I'd be suspecting the tunes too. Try the other tunes, maybe there is a happy one.
Keep in mind for towing higher HP is not necessarily better. Kinda counter intuitive. If you have a 20 a 60 and an 80 hp tune, go with the lowest. The extra HP comes from dumping more fuel and if the rest of the system cannot burn it properly the extra fuel just becomes smoke and heat.
