Looking to set myself up with a set of studded snows. Current tires are 275/65R18. I found a set of 265/70R17 for $150 each. I found an eBay listing for a set of 17x7 1/2, 8 on 170MM rims for $50 each.
There any reason this setup won't work? I concern of mine is the brake clearance from 18s to 17s, but I've read I should be ok. The rims seem a bit narrow as well too. Any issue there? Thanks.
My choice of Winter (All Season) tires that can be studded are the Goodyear Duratrac.
I've tried several including three sets of BFG All Terrain and found the Duratrac's to be the best in Winter on Snow and Ice.
BFG's would snow pack solid in the tread and not clean out. They then become a slick with no grip.
One thing to check (cause I don't know) is if the 17 inch will also be compatible with your truck's stability program and anti lock brakes. Trucks/cars today are sometimes too smart for their own good.

That's something I haven't thought of either. Which is why I was hesitant on the 17s. 17s are going to be much cheaper though.
I wouldn’t hesitate to use the 17’s ( my stock tires are 18”)
just curious how the brakes would be affected by a change in tire size though. I’m no mechanic, but nothing in the brakes change when the tire is changed, and you’re going down a bit in tire size.
I’d vote for the studded Duratracs too (even though you’re not asking). I use them for plowing; they’re great.

Nokian Hakkapelita LT2’s. Best snow and ice tire there is. Run the stock size. I’m in Montana at 6300’ elevation and have run them on all my vehicles for years.
Nokian used to make Bridgestone Winter tires. Now Bridgestone makes their own.
They are an excellent Winter tire.
The BEST Winter tire I've used is the Blizzak, but they are Winter only. I would demonstrate the stopping and steering ability of Blizzak's in a school parking lot covered with ice and snow.
People would think we were almost on dry pavement. They were very impressive, but..... Winter Only.... They wear out fast..
17 inch wheel will fit with no issues, that year truck was offered with 17's, 18's or 20's ALL with the same size brakes so no issues like I said. And a quality snow tire will actually pack with snow becasue snow in the tread actually gives you traction on snow and or ice
