Firestone Destination MT

Got Snow??
I was pulled out by the local snow plow this morning after getting stuck in town....pathetic. It's definitely time for new shoes.

I have the 2" Autosprings leveling kit and stock 18" rims.

Firestone Destination MT
Should I stay stock 275/65/18 (32x11) or go taller but the same width 275/70/18 (33x11) or go taller and wider 285/65/18 (33x12)?

285/65/18 (taller and wider) would look good and I've read clearance won't be an issue but is this best for mud and snow?

Any thoughts?

I would go larger than stock, either size you listed would look good. The 275/70/18 is actually the taller tire at 33.2" and looks to be a little cheaper. That is an excellent mud and snow tire.

im supposed to get 6 more inches of snow here today and one think ive figured out that mud tires dont grip well in snow and ice there way to hard of rubber. ive got a set of hercules avalanch xtremes that are decent. any winter tire grips better than a mud tire

Tires

To expand on what M&S said, typically snow tires are a softer compound so they'll stick better under ice and snow conditions. By the same token, they're not so good under 'normal' driving conditions the other 6-10 months of the year. Because they are a softer compound, they'll wear out sooner. That's why I have 2 sets of tires for each of my trucks: one set for winter only and another set for the rest of the year. With a winter set, you can use steel rims so the snow, salt etc isn't chewing up your nice set.

Thanks for the info... deep snow is the problem and back roads around here will all turn to mud in a few weeks anyway. For ice I either go slow or stay home. Packed snow is not usually a problem either. I still like the MT's but I'm told I can't spend that kind of $ till after xmas so I've got time to think it over.

I had BFG All-Terrain T/A KO's on my 96 and liked them, but man are they pricey for these 18" wheels.

in my experience in selling and installing tires, mt's are cool looking tires but are not the best option for snow, they do a great job in snow and mud because they dig through that stuff, the problem is when u have slick surface below that snow the mud tires have those big blocks for tread that dont grip. the siping in the tires is what you get your grip in those slick conditions and the mt dont have any siping(small cuts or lines that run accrost the tread) and the wider you go the worse the winter grip because the contact patch is so big, for winter skinnier is better, so if u live in a mild climate with not alot of winter weather mt's are ok but for extreme conditions i would steer clear of the mt's.

X2 on the skinny tires for winter. They go thru snow so much better.
