So this is confusing me obviously. So besides figuring out how to even get it on the screen, will I have the ability to use either nav option if I install?
I have an android phone, so it might be different. When I plug in my phone, it brings android auto up on the screen. Hitting the nav button will show you the options, which for me is Waze and Google maps. If you unplug the phone it will take you back to your factory nav system.
On android auto, it seems to default back to whichever nav you used before. I prefer Waze, and use it on my commute all the time.
If there is a way to directly DL waze to the infotainment system, I've not found it, but honestly haven't hunted, as I always have the phone with me.
You dont have to unplug your phone, you just hit the Return to Sync button and it will allow you to swap back and forth from Android Auto and Sync at will. So you can choose the Sync Nav, but still have Spotify or whatever million other audio apps playing while watching the stock Nav. With that said, I have no clue why you'd ever pick the stock Nav over Gmaps or Waze. Download your area and it'll even work with no cell service.
If you use Android auto it will automatically come up after you select it as default nav app and same will happen if you use Google music, if you use that for streaming services.
My experience has been different than Wildcard's. You can select your default nav choice in the settings on the Sync Screen. Also, for Waze to be displayed on the screen, my iPhone must be both plugged into the usb, and have the Waze app running in the foreground. If you use another app while driving, it will default back to the native nav.
In answer to Faceplant, you must be updated to Sync 3 3.0. I had to do it via USB. Lots of videos describing the steps on youtube.
For me the Waze interface was slow and not as seemless as the OEM nav. That’s just one of the reasons I ditched it. I don’t trust the OEM nav, Waze or the iPhones maps app.
I always have a paper map backup or some other form of directions. I’ve had the experience that none of them are up to the moment accurate. New construction makes them all miss the mark. And none of them are flexible enough to use multiple options to get where I need to go.
But it I do like the OEM nav just for the convenience.

I gave up living in the 1990's back in the 1990's. That map is stale the moment you print it.

I've had the opposite experience. In nearly 30K miles, I can only remember one construction update (a roundabout) that was not updated in Google Maps or Waze.
And none of them are flexible enough to use multiple options to get where I need to go.
Huh? Both Google Maps and Waze give you the ability to see and choose from multiple routes, and include the time and distances for all routes. Not sure what you mean.
Waze can only be used on the Sync screen when the iPhone is plugged in. Otherwise, you still have access to the regular Ford Nav.
That really helps answer my question. I'd like to have both options for nav. I took a company trip with a coworker this week in his 17 Escape. He used Waze on his phone but his sync version isn't able to display on the screen. I have the app and will play around with it next time I drive our truck.

You can only display either the Ford nav screen or Waze. You can switch between the two, but it's cumbersome- actually awkward. I have found it to be not such a great mash-up; and on my set-up it always seems Waze eventually stops updating.
So I run the Ford nav (which includes the Sirius/XM traffic info stuff) and it will reroute you if it finds a faster route - same as Waze (Google maps don't). Not sure I trust that 'feature', especially when pulling the 5th wheel.
Simultaneously I run Waze on my iPhone. I like the heads up info on road conditions, accidents, hazards on road & cars on shoulders. So that the Waze audio comes through the Ford audio (just like the Ford nav commands do) you have to go into the Waze settings and set the sound output to "Play as Bluetooth phone call". That kind of fools the Ford system into playing the iPhone/Waze audio as if a phone call is coming in (and it shows it like that for a moment on the Ford screen). With this set-up I can listen to the radio and still get Waze and Ford nav audio updates all from the same source.
