460 Head Flow

Are there any differences in the 1972 (pre emission) 460 heads and the 1977 (emmission) 460 heads such as flow characteristics and so on ? Just trying to decide whether to leave the 1977 engine like it is or if I need to change different things . I would like the engine to run the best that it can . I understand that the early 460's ran the best before the emission standards were put into place. That is where I would like this engine to be eventually. Any help would be greatly appreciated!!!!! This engine is in a 1977 cab and chassis F350!!!!!

Combustion chamber size, other differences. This thread ranks them in one post.

https://www.460ford.com/forum/37-eng...ron-heads.html

You can see the sizes here:

Kelly hotrod - Ford Engines Page 3

Pre emissions 460s were 10.5 compression, and you can see how they got compression down via the larger chambers, and also a taller block starting in 70 1/2 and again in '72. You may not want to run 10+ compression if you are going to be hauling or towing. That said, there is improvement to be made in all the stock iron heads with proper porting and the usual tricks as can be found on the 460ford site, where it's all 460, all the time.

minimal flow differences in stock form....early heads are a touch better flow wise...

They are both nearly the same playing field once ported.

Early castings have a little longer short turn allowing slightly better flow...in a 1 ton truck engine it won't matter a hill of beans.

Stay far away from D2VE's. They have open chambers and are not desirable for any purpose.
