SO i had to replace my pass side cv axle yesterday, and the nut calls for 221ft lbs of torque. Most torque wrenches only go up to 150, so i gave it the 150 and a half a turn more. Today went for a 80 mile ride and i just checked underneath and found the outer boot to be spinning on the metal housing and a bit of the grease leaking out! I got home and used my IR thermometer and found the pass side was 25 degrees hotter than drivers side......So i backed the nut off a bit.....Anyone else have any issues like this before?
the two bearings are back to back with a FIXED spacer between them... They have to be bottomed out TIGHT so there is no excess clearance..... I don't see where 175 ft lb or 225 ft pounds would make a difference... your pulling it metal to metal. don't think that has anything to do with the boot and grease.
Thanks Steve for the reply, I grabbed a bigger torque wrench from work today and i came home and retorqued it........I wasnt far off.....So it defintely wasnt to tight like i originally thought. So tonight i went for a short drive and the outer cv joint metal hub was hot as hell again....hottter than the drivers side. So im thinkning that its gotta be the cv joint is binding in the boot somewhere.......Nothing else was touched...no caliper removed..anything. When i get some time this week, im gonna jack it up and spin it by hand and find out whats going on
I wasnt loose when i installed it, i think it just got too hot . Its still a little loose, but theres a lip on there to prevent it from coming off. I checked for binding yesterday and didnt seem to find any. I replaced my rotors while i was in there and some new shocks. I'll have top watch it for the next couple days and see what happens. If it still runs hot, i would have to say that its a wheel bearing
