So I'm looking at a 97 4.6l f150 with a bad tranny and I'm looking for a replacement one before I decide if I'm buying the truck or not. I found a 4r70w local (the only one somewhat local) that is out of an 03 mustang that had a 4.6. Now I've read bits and pieces about this sort of thing but I figured it would be better to get a definitive answer in one post. Will this swap work? If so is it direct or is this some things that need tweaked to make it work?
One thing I'm milling around about is that I hear the tailshaft is shorter on the mustang than the f150, can I swap the tail shaft off the junk one in the truck and do it that way if that's the case? Other thing is ive heard that that the speedo pick up will be totally off from a 97 to 03, will the tail shaft swap fix this issue?
Real helpful....like I said not locally, I can drive three hours and yes they are all over the place and if I have to I will. Locally it's all out of mustangs that's why I'm asking.

I think that the length is different, but I don't remember for sure.
You can swap the tailshaft and extension housing. All you need to do to swap the shaft is take EVERYTHING out of each transmission, swap the shafts, and put the entire transmission back together. The speedo should be reading off the rear axle, so that won't be an issue.

Well that's a bummer, i was afraid the shafts might be different like they are between 4 and 2 wheel drive. I'm going go ahead and assume you are correct but can anyone here 100% confirm this suspicion?
