I have a 2018 F350 diesel DRW. When I start the engine there is a strip of red lights on the driver's side dashboard up near the windshield that turn on for a couple of seconds and then go out. What are these lights? It's probably in the user manual, but I can't find it.
That is your pre-collision warning system that will light up and sound a warning over the speaker system if you need to be braking and aren’t. There are settings to make it more or less sensitive in the advanced vehicle settings menu.
And per the manual, when that is lit up, and you hit the brake pedal, you get instantaneous 100% braking, truck, trailer if attached, engine braking, etc.
I don’t have the manual in front of me at this time, but there are different “levels” of pre-charged braking that will occur depending on whether the system is calculating an actual collision or not. If there is an impending collision, the system will pre-charge the brakes and any application of braking will apply 100% braking action, regardless of how hard you press the pedal. With that said, just because the light is going off, it isn’t telling you a collision is about to happen. Once you “learn” how the system works, you will see it going off as a car is is turning in front of you, you see it, you know it will be out of the way, but you press the accelerator pedal. It does not apply braking...it scares you to death. 😬
Always seems to do it when a car is turning right in front of you, and they are clearly going to make the turn with plenty of room, so you don't slow down.

The same thing happens to me once or twice a month it seems.
