Hi guys, I'm helping to get my friends 1996 RV running again, which has a 7.5 L Ford V8 engine. The shop is diagnosed it with a bad ECU. I've been looking for replacement, and came across a couple questions regarding the Ford ECU's that I thought maybe you guys could shed some light on. Basically, I'm trying to find out what Ford ECU's (if any) would be candidates to reflash to use in this RV. The actual ECU number for this vehicle is pretty rare and expensive (Part number: f6uf-12a650-ra, Tear Tag: tom0, $300-$600), and I see a lot of near-matches for a lot cheaper.
I'm curious whether anyone knows what Ford ECU's use the exact same hardware and just different software (and can be reflashed to work), or if there are hardware differences as well. For example, could a 1996 Ford e350 ECU (part number: f6uf-12a650-fc, $80 on eBay) be reflashed to use in this vehicle? Could an ECU for a 1996 Ford Explorer hypothetically be reflashed to work? (Part number: F67F-12A650-FC, $10 on eBay)? Thanks for your help, I've been Googling about this for hours and things are still a bit fuzzy on what the differences/limitations of these ECU's are.
The hardware code for this ECU is efi-sd48e, so I guess to be compatible, the new ECU would need to have this code as well, and if it doesn't have the same software, must be flashed to it.
A quick note on these OBD1 PCMs, they contain no flash memory and therefore cannot be flashed, but that is OK because as long as you find a PCM for the same engine/trans combo it will plug in and work, I am making an educated guess based on your PCM code(SD48E) that your RV is not MAF can you confirm? The 7.5/E4OD combo was very common in HD pickups all the way to the end of production for this powertrain in 97 so they shouldn't be that hard to find, and yes there are slight configuration differences based on the axle gear ratio but that won't be noticable from the drivers seat.
